Every Fermentation I do I get about an inch or so of brown slurry at the bottom of my FV.
Is this the yeast collection people keep going on about as i hate to throw good stuff away or is this the dead/bad yeast.
Also I have noticed on a couple of deposits at the bottom there are sometimes two slightly different tones slurry of which i suppose is due tot the coulouration of the beer on the top 2mm of the sludge which is a couple of tones draker than the main slurry.
This slurry at the bottom does not smell and tastes ok as yes I have tried it for research purposes.

If you've spent the cash on liquid yeast then you should dump your next batch on top of the "brown slurry", or yeast cake. This takes a bit of timing and alway go darker with the next brew. You'll get a rocket fast start-up!
If it's dry yeast, just buy another packet. Unless your lazy or forget or both.
If your interested, google up "yeast washing" or "yeast propagation" for other techniques.

So you just put the wort onto the yeast cake and it'll start to ferment? No need to pitch a new batch of yeast?flytact wrote:If you've spent the cash on liquid yeast then you should dump your next batch on top of the "brown slurry", or yeast cake. Now I realise why those liquid yeasts are so expensive, didn't realise you could reuse them!DaaB wrote:Yep, although i'd only use half of it as a whole yeast cake is far too much.dan_olo wrote:So you just put the wort onto the yeast cake and it'll start to ferment? Do a search for yeast propagation, may even be in the techniques section here. You can turn one pack of liquid yeast into 6! Then each of those into 6, and then.....dan_olo wrote: Now I realise why those liquid yeasts are so expensive, didn't realise you could reuse them!
