HI
Can you clarify something for me...
From this thread alone I quite fancy the sound of Thames Valley 3, i live in middlesbrough so should I be buying a Yorkshire yeast?
Thanks

Depends quite how patriotic you are and keen to deny that anywhere else can make proper beer.

Using a lancashire yeast could be controversial I guess ;-)

Can anyone coment on why they dont comment on esterablity for these midland strains? No info of antenuation either.

Also, how would a home brewer make a wort high mineral....or for that matter, low mineral?
1 - cos they give out precious little information (especially compared to say wyeast or white labs)

2 - water trreatment. Use the water treatment calculator: http://www.jimsbeerkit.co.uk/calculators.htm based on your water profile and a combination of CRS and gypsum/calcium carbonate/epsom salts to adjust it. Depends on yeast + style combo. E.G. I assume burton is appropriate for a hopped pale ale so will select that style on water calc and as my wate is so soft it might as well be bottled use a load of gypsum / calcium carbonate.

For low mineral - depends on your existing water content and adjustments. Your 'local' yeast will likely work in your local water but bear in mind 'yorkshire' is a BIG place witha lot of defferent geology and water profiles - limestone areas v. different from grit etc.

Re: Brewlab yeast - slant (slope) trades ?

Would anyone be interested in trading some BrewLab yeast strains for some BrewTek or WYeast strains I have ? I can send small agar prefilled and sterilized glass slant tubes so it wouldn't be too much trouble on your end. You would just need to streak out a slant or two and then send it back to me. You can see my yeast bank here

Thanks!

For other USA residents:
I was able to order 4 Brewlab slants directly from Brewlab and pay with Paypal. I just sent an email to info@brewlab.co.uk with my request and they got right back to me. I ordered Thames Valley 3, East Midlands 1, Somerset 1, and Yorkshire 2. The TOTAL cost (including postage) for four slopes delivered to Philadelphia was 19 pounds or about $30. I highly recommend them. Outstanding customer service and excellent yeast slopes. I've added these strains to my yeast bank http://micrap.selfip.com:81/yeastbank.html

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but if you ask them for a yeast from a specific brewery, they may be able to provide. I asked for the Holdens yeast and they came back saying 'we have a yeast collected from Dudley which is where Holdens is situated'... I can only assume they're being coy and it's probably the real stuff!

Back from the dead.

But it is useful to know.
I'm now the proud owner of a "Holdens" style yeast and a "Black Country Ale" style yeast (what ever that is?) both cost together 7.99 via PayPal.
