i usually get the spraymalt all over the neck when trying to spoon it in, last time i did it i dissolved the spraymalt in a pan, then poured it in using a funnel and then brought it up to the boil (you've really got to keep an eye on it). This seemed to work better.

Tinfoil is fine for putting on the top just let the steam sterilise it for a while and your good to go, even in the lab we would never bother using bungs.

Not sure I really sure I understand most of this thread #-o but if I wanted to cultivate some yeast after I and have cracked open a few bottles and QC'ed them, what is the best way of sanitising the neck? I have seen mention of flaming the neck or would it be ok just to wipe round with starsan?

Cheers DaaB I"ll give it a whirl.

BTW I was in Hook Norton last w/e unfortunately the brewery and shop are only open weekdays

I did sample a pint or three at the Sun Inn, took some nice photos of the locals playing dominoes, they may like to see them them so will pop back in one weekday, then pay a visit to the brewery and see if they will let me have some yeast

Just read you have some Hook Norton too....very interesting

I have some Crouch Vale if you fancy some?
Steve can you not get access to 25 ml universals (p*ss sample bottles), these should be about knocking most labs are as cheap as chips and sterile (irradated).

I really should think about setting up a yeast slant library and save on some cash.
Are these available from the Chemists and is boiling (not in a pressure cooker) better than chemical sanitisers? One last question, could I get similar results to an autoclave if I put the stuff in the over in a pyex dish with lid and set it to 135 (with a little water)?
Autoclave is effect because you have super saturated steam which is most effect at killing much beet that dry heat. You need get holy trinity to reach this 121c, 15pis for 15mins. But all sterilization generally works at a 95% confidence, 98% if you want to do dual cycles but you can never prove total sterilization

That been said a good boil in hot water will reduce you bio load substantially, this combined with good sanitation and a healthy yeast culture you should be fine

hope this is of some help
