Ironically, I use S-04 in my stout....and most people are aware of my thoughts on that yeast. I find I don't notice it's objectionable flavours in that beer so then the other, very desirable, properties of S-04 make it a winner.

Now I can do decent temperature control, I'm going to do some tests with S-04 at lower temps to see if I can control the flavour characteristics a bit more.

I too like to culture from bottles,
Mainly because its a bit of fun, and is a lot more romantic than smacking a pack of Wyeast.
Also because as an earlier poster suggested, it could well be these "nasties" that you get from the bottle that give some of the more interesting flavours. on top of that, you get to drink a nice beer while its all happening.
The best Belgian I have made, used recultured yeast from a bottle of Unibrou Frigiante.

To crack the record, does anyone know if Crouch Vale Brewers use a primary strain to bottle?

May i suggest you try the Coopers yeast - they use the primary strain to bottle condition, albeit, a fresh batch after centrifuging to remove the old primary yeast.

Coopers Pale Ale was available from Tescos and Waitrose when i was there (a tad over 12 months ago now). I use a 6 pack to make a starter, a bit more than needed but i get to drink 6 nice beers....

At the very least its a good excuse to try an aussie beer that isnt Fosters....

For those interested in history - some info on Coopers here

Dunno as I can't recall ever seeing a bottle of Crouch Vale beer.

I have recently come across a couple of places that do sell them though, the trouble is the yeast may not survive the storage. I may have to buy a 6 pack for the weekend to find out :-k
It'll be in amongst the beers of the world section (at least thats where it is in my tescos).

They may have the sparkling ale instead (red label instead of the green label of the pale ale). You can reculture from this too but i tend to use the lower ABV version.

i noticed recently that the Coopers Vintage Ale won an ward for best strong ale. Apparently its at tescos too.
