Just to update everyone on it's progress, I have fermented it in a demijohn & split it using Jim's method here.

It worked a treat, I made a small starter in a milk bottle first, 300ml water/40g light, hopped spraymalt & fermented this for 2 days to "wake it up".

I then dissolved 460g bag of light, hopped spraymalt (the remainder of the 500g bag) in 4 pints of water, boiled & cooled it topped it up to 8 pints, added the small starter, fermented it in a demijohn for a week & transferred into 12 small bottles which are now in the fridge.

They have been bottled 4 days now, they are clearing up nicely & a healthy amount of yeast has setled in the bottom of the bottles.

All the information on liquid yeasts that i was after is here 8)

Tomorrow i'm ordering my first liquid yeast, will split it up, ala Jim and store in fridge. How long will it last in fridge???

I honestly don't know as this is my first try at this method myself.

I will be using the bottles to make starters from until the end of my brewing season, probably around late June/early July.

If I have any bottles left I will probably sling the contents & start with a fresh yeast when I resume brewing after my summer break, probably around late October.

HH, did you read the article in Brewers Contact this month about reusing yeast. The bloke has been using the same strain of yeast since the early 80's that he propogated from a bottle of Guiness. He did a test where he split a brew of 5 gallons between four commmercial yeast and the one he has been using and he didn't think there was any benefit from the former.

If you make a bottled batch like Graham Wheeler suggests in his book (strong, all grain) you could keep this strain going for years. :)

Just sampled my beer made with brewlab Thames valley 3 after only 5 days since being bottled very good and nice and clear. It did take a couple of weeks to finish though had to rouse it after a week to get it going again, a stir every other day would finish it earlier I would imagine, I will b using this again as I like it.

I've used 9 and got loads of wonderful bubblegum esters from it. It behaved itself well too. Fermented out in 4 days and dropped nice and bright very quickly. Apart from the bubblegum theres nothing cowboy about this one - a true gent of a yeast imo.

I thought number 9 tasted a bit too much like S-04 for my liking. It's not as flocculant though. I didn't get any bubblegum off it when I used it.

I didn't like it that much so my quest moves on....

When I asked about the difference between the three and two they said that number two could cope with higher gravity beers better around 1.048 plus.


Sorry just noticed you asked about Yorkshire strain not Thames valley :bonk .

I'm fermenting with a brewlab yeast, "Barnsley B", plenty of bubblegum!!
It's very lively in the fermenter, smells great IMO, wife not to happy about the whiff, she doesn't understand!!
Got 10 samples from the slope, I'll post the results when I try the taste test!!

Been fermenting now with 2" of "gunge" on the top for 4 days, it's nothing like s04 yeast!
