Utilised my yeast sludge?

Post by Martin the fish » Sun Apr 27, 2008 1:02 pm

I didn't have time to 'wash' my yeast slurry as per OB's recommendations. I sort of did but 24 hrs after racking off beer into bottles. I sterilised an airlock whilst bottling and placed on FV as soon as i had finished. I then had to leave FV in air con fermenting room for 24 hrs while i done mundane boring stuff like work.
So this morning i sterilised everything in sight. Cooled some boiled water(2 pints) and added to slurry. Shook this around in a circular motion till mixed and then poured off into sterilised demijohn. This was then put in fridge for an hour whilst i sterilised 8 PET bottles. I also cooled some more boiled water. I then poured the residue that had begun to form above sludge in bottom of demijohn into PET bottles. I topped this up with a little sterilised water and have placed in fridge.

Is this about right? What did i do wrong? How should i go about this in the future? I quite enjoyed myself though :D

Any pointers welcome and greatfully recieved :D :D :D

Er, is what i done about right anyone? The yeast seems to have settled in the bottom of the PET's now. Although there is a cloudy bit above the clear water?

DaaB wrote:Not quite sure what you did there but the idea is to pour off the yeast while it is still suspended in the water.

Mix it all up and check it periodically. The darker trub and dead cells will settle first then as soon as you start to see a thin whiter layer start to form, that is the clean yeast beginning to settle.

At this point, pour off the water which will still contain the majority of clean yeast before any more settles.

It takes around 10 to 20 mins depending on yeast etc. If you leave it much more than that the clean yeast will have settled and you'll need to start again.
I think i did do that DaaB. The trub settled quite quickly and after that i poured off the milky substance above it. I'm not altogether bothered if it went wrong or i cocked it up. I'd rather have a few tries with yeast i'm not that bothered about so i can get it right. I'm hoping that the stuff i now have in PET's in the fridge will contain some healthy yeast. I guess i'll know when i do a starter.
Could i make a starter out of one just to see if i'm on the right track? If it acts like yeast and tastes ok i should be alright eh?

The PET bottles have a good layer in the bottom of them now-i just went and checked. They still have some slightly cloudy water above them. Thanks for the advice DaaB.
Will be a week before i can squeeze another brew in so i'll make up a starter as per your comments the evening before.

Cheer's DaaB. Raising my nearly empty glass to you. :D
