Brupaks Yeast

Post by bitter_dave » Mon Mar 05, 2007 2:15 pm

Brupaks produce sell their own brand of real ale yeast (see item 13):

hop and grape link

(sorry for the long link - I don't know how to shorten it  )

Anyway, I was wondering if it was the yeast provided with Brupaks kits?

Also I was wondering if anyone had used it more generally. I might consider trying it for an all grain brew if I knew a bit more about it's characterisitics, but I've never used it.

Of course Clive would be able to answer this, but I'm also curious to have the impressions of others.

I was on the HG site today wondering the same thing. Only 85p as well. But only 6g. OK if you make a starter, I guess.

I was just going to use two sachets if I used it, but to be honest unless someone gives me a ringing endorsement of the yeast I'm going to stick with S 04 which I'm happy with.

SAFALE S 04 Yeast

In using the Safale 04 yeast in kits or extract brewing what would one reccomend 1 or 2 sachets per 23 litre brew?

The idea of the S-04 and all fermentis packs is that the have enough viable yeast to pitch directly to 5 gallons. However, i always make a starter becuase i'm pedantic. If you're doing extract, it should be easy.

One sachet of Safale is more than enough yeast for 23 litres, or 25 litres for that matter (it has 11 gms)

According to the MrMalty Pitching rate calculator one packet of Safale is more than enough for anything up to 23L of 1.050 beer. Above that you'd be slightly underpitching but I wouldn't worry about it. For really really strong beers (1.080+) then two packets might be an idea.

Actually 6g of dried yeast would be enough to do a light beer like a mild.

Most people using liquid yeasts really underpitch - that's one advantage of dried yeasts.
