Slightly out of date yeast.

Post by Monkeybrew » Thu Apr 14, 2011 10:03 pm

I picked up cheap (£8.99) Brewferm Gallia kit today from my LHBS today because its 2 months out of date.

Do you think that the yeast will be ok to use?

Probably, an extra two months isn't ridiculous for dried yeast, though obviously its not ideal and it may take a bit longer to build up strength. I'd probably try it, and either have a backup pack to hand (always reassuring to have in any case) or a plan to visit the LHBS for one if not much happens in the first 24hrs or so.

Cheers

He actually chucked in a 6g Muntons sachet FOC, so I've got a backup, I would just prefer to use the supplied kit yeast if possible.

Thanks.

Most likely it will make beer just fine - some of the billions of yeast should be alive - so they'll reproduce and then go on to ferment your beer.
However, given its age and probable storage conditions (unrefrigerated) you might get 'better' beer if you used yeast that has not been so abused.
Even dry yeast is still a living organism, the longer it is stored and especially if it is stored in less than ideal conditions, the less viable and vital it will be when you use it.

It failed miserably, so I pitched the yeast from my Old Bruin kit and it took off after 7 hours.
