O2 Cylinders - regulations?

Post by SteveD » Sat Apr 28, 2007 12:35 pm

I'm thinking of going over to O2 for wort oxygenation. The cylinders are easily available on eBay, and one seller states that you can get them refilled & pressure tested at diving shops.

I popped into one and was told that, yes, they can refill them BUT they want to see the 'certificate of gas handling', or whatever it was, to show you're permitted to handle O2

Does anybody already use O2, or know anything about this certification? She also said that aparently BOC, etc, need you to have this before they will rent you a cylinder.

Bit of a bummer because I'm watching a cylinder as we speak, with about 4hrs to go!

I just use the disposable ones from WeldUK, you can get these mail order no problem. Or are you after an actual full scale cylinder?

I'm open to suggestion as this is new to me. The one offered is a full size cylinder - looks 3'-4' high but if it's going to be hassle to refill, then maybe it's not worth it. The Weld UK ones are £14.99 + £7.99 delivery. It doesn't state their capacity. The one on fleabay is full, so if I get it cheap enough it might be worth just using it till empty and re-flogging it if refilling it proves difficult

Dive shops will do o2, but you have to have the aforementioned certificate to handle it. Pure o2 is toxic, not to mention a massive fire hazard. Dive shops carry it for nitrox divers (Tough certification!).

I don't know how you go about getting the cert, but i don't imagine homebrewing would be in their list of allowed professions. ;)

id get it if just to use the morning after.

I used to dive in the forces and a couple of slurps in the morning after a good night on the tiles soon clears the hangover! :D

True they are a bit on the pricey side. I've only just got mine, but Scooby said they will last for a year which seems about right seeing as you only need a couple of minutes blast for each batch.

The certification the dive shops talk about are technical nitrox diving certificate which allows you to use 100% for decompression.

A normal nitrox certificate normally only lets you use up to 50%.

The other route is to go on a gas blending course so you are 'approved' to handle 100%

Luckily I have all three

Most dive shops will not be able to fill past 180 bar of o2 even in a small cylinder. As the pressures required for nitrox are low so there o2 cylinder soon drops below what your cylinder could handle. Its probably easier to obtain straight from BOC (or the like).

The fleabay cylinder went for about £50, I bugged out well before that. As the Weld UK one seems to last long enough, I'll get one of those (and the regulator :? ) and see how I get on.

Thanks for everyone's input :)

If it's any consolation, WeldUK deliver the next day. Well, they better bloody do for 8 quid.
