Wilko's yeast
Wilko's yeast
Has anyone use the Young's dried beer yeast from wilko's before? I picked some up by accident, trying for wine yeast and was considering using it for some Turbo Cider... what do you think, the wlp775 is a little too pricey at present.
I've analysed the yeasts used in 200 Derby festival entries over the last three years. Nobody has used Youngs which perhaps gives you a clue! However, looking at beers brewed with similar 'anonymous' yeasts, typically 1 in 20 wins an award. The corresponding figure for good quality dried yeasts from the original manufacturers is around 1 in 5.
So I'd sling it. If you're feeling brave bung a few litres of wort in a demijohn and ferment it with Youngs and compare. You might discover something interesting - hardly anybody uses Windsor yet I've had a couple of very good reports in the last couple of months.

May have misunderstood; if you want to use the Young's for turbo cider it
depends on its alcohol tolerance. You can always try it and see if it goes as far as you want, if not add something else. But I'd still be inclined to lob it.
