Re-using Yeast from a bottle - 1845

Post by SiHoltye » Mon May 28, 2007 8:48 pm

I've just tried to revive the yeast in the bottle of Fullers 1845. (First timer). What a lovely beer that is, along with ESB great for a one bottle evening.

I'll try and keep this brief I think my wife is on the brink of leaving me over this. She did ask the question earlier.....'If you had to make a choice, would it be me or the beer?'... :? I didn't answer and we sat in silence for a while.

I boiled up some water and DME to 1060 (at 70° - what would that be at 20°? There is a calc but I don't know it.) and when down to 25° poured this into the dregs in the bottle, swirled and shook it, and then poured it into a sanitized Diet Coke with Lime PET bottle. Having put about 12 grains of Brupaks YV in the PET bottle already.

Then screwed on the lid, shook like mad, unscrewed the lid and repeated for a bit to oxygenate the mixture. Finally screwing on the lid to allow squeeze testing for activity later.

Can I ask if people know if this is the Fullers Yeast or another priming type? I know this yeast can be purchased but it's all fun the first time.

I plan to use this in about a weeks time to make up a kit. Any suggestions on one that is good and would suit this yeast??? I've got an IPA ready in 2 weeks or so, I don't want another yet.

Thanks anyone.

as 1845 is a nice strong malty beer, why not stick it in something similar, Brupaks Kirkburton Ale is 7% or so, just a thought

Sounds good Garth. I was wondering about headcracker, but not having tasted it, I think consider it and the Brupaks and others. Firstly I'll have to see is the reclaimation has worked though.
I have emailed Fullers to ask about yeast usage in bottle conditioned 1845. I wonder if the work experience office admin assistant  they assign to answering website feedback will be of much help. I'll let you know!

Drinking shop bought Duvel now........dribble, dribble, dribble........ :out

That seemed easy enough.

got the yeastie fermenting out the spraymalt soup, how do I get from this, to pitching in a weeks time? Do I just keep adding more wort, or pour off the old before adding the new larger amount? What volume should I pitch on 25L?

Sorry if this is re-treading old ground.

Interesting thread SiHoltye, heard back from Fullers yet? I would be surprised if they used a different strain for bottling.

Not heard back but the starter or whatever you want to call it smells right for a malty beer! Very wierd indeed.

Can't wait to chuck it in something! I've got a wherry kit I want to do now I think I know a little more, (see 'Wherry Worry' thread - yes, sorry for starting that), and if this thing grows a bit I'll split it to use it in that next week, and in a stronger brew, whatever one my local small HBS has.

All excited again now, wife thinks I'm extra wierd!

Cheers Daab I'll bulk her up to 1.2ish L tomorrow morning with a view to pitching 1L on a wherry next Wednesday. I love ESB & London Pride, and love the recipe section you have here. I'm trying to hold off impulsingly spending a wad at HBS so I can AG ESB, Summer Lightning, Harveys Sussex (my fave). I figure getting an AG of these three close must be Nirvana!

It's like oven-baking your conkers! Schoolboy Magic!

Have made it up, now time I guess to let it grow.

Also remembering to keep it in a dark place 'cos the yeasties don't like bright light, it makes them produce off flavours I read somewhere here.

According to http://www.nada.kth.se/~alun/Beer/Bottle-Yeasts/ it is the primary yeast strain. However, the webpage hasn't been updated since 1999 so the info might be outdated.

Mysterio - I am doing the tour at Fullers on Friday, so I'll ask about the bottle yeast then. :)

The Hock cellar is the best part of the tour!

I must re-visit the Chiswick brewery and do the full tour.
Last time, about 10 years ago, was with a dozen 'boys in blue' and we never made it out of the bar! I think only 3 people wanted to see the brewery - the rest were downing 1845 and golden pride like water!!
Check out the beers we have for sale @ Mix Brewery

I recovered the yeast from a bottle of 1845 about 10 years ago not long after Fullers first started producing it. I used it a few times repitching it from one brew to the next via secondary or my own bottles I suspect. Gave me good results (including a stout), second only to Wyeast Thames Valley (Brakspears).

Have pitched this yeast into a Wherry kit this evening. I poured off (down the drain) all but 100ml-ish of the yeast starter thing, swilled the remaining to pick up the settled yeast from the bottom, and poured that onto the made up kit. 3 hours later and it's bubbling a little already. If this ferments well, may try re-using from the bottom of this fermenter straight away. It sure would save using a dry yeast and sterilising a bowl, boiling water, cooling water, rehydrating yeast, leaving 30 mins, stirring, leaving 10 mins. I'll report back. Am especially interested if the kit picks up any of the Fuller's flavour from the yeast.
