Wort Aeration

Post by Jim » Thu Sep 22, 2005 6:11 pm

Does anyone do this?

Apparently, although there are purpose built aerators for homebrewing, you can use an aquarium pump and aeration stone. I think you would need a filter, though, to keep out wild yeast and bacteria.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone with any experience of using any kind of aerator.

I've bought a good book of home brewing: "brew ware" of Karl F. Lutzen; he explain that to be sure to filter the air so that only clean air goes into the fermenter, you have to built a chamber and filling it with cotton, you can also spray the cotton with grain alcohol solution. B)

Yes, I think the special homebrew aerators come with a filter. They're quite expensive, though, but I think they last quite a while.

For the moment, I'm just going to stick to giving the fermenter a good stir every other day. The last batch I did with Wyeast was OK when I just did that.

The first batch I did, I stirred also the wort but I's always afraid about infection with wild yeast, so I've stop to do it now.
actually, I put the fermenting vessel in a warm place and with a good mashing temperature and a good aeration when pitching the yeast, it work very well at every time :D

This is a safe way to ensure that the air is uncontaminated:

It is not necessary to have an airstone in the hydrogen peroxide solution. To sanitize your air stone, you may soak in vodka or iodophor solution. :)
