Finings

Post by Steeev » Thu Jun 08, 2006 9:34 am

Sorry if this is posted in the wrong section, but I s'pose it's to do with removing yeast from suspension in a roundabout way.

Question is - when bottling, would it be better to add finings to the primary fermenter a day before racking to secondary, or add it to the bottom of the secondary when racking? Also is there any point in doubling the finings used, i.e. finings in primary and another load in secondary before bottling?

Thanks Daab.

Is Ritchie's Beer-Brite a good sub for isinglass?
My bottles seem to be nice and clear on it (albeit with a 1cm slab of yeast at the bottom due to no secondary fermentation).
Also Wilkinson's stock it for 79p a pop. :)

Finings are cheap, isinglass is about a pound from http://www.hopandgrape.co.uk/. Gelatin costs the same from supermarkets, too.

I just ordered some isinglass so I'm going to rack my latest bitter into a keg with it so I'll report back!

I have used finings twice and both times the beer had a nasty taste to it. I only really managed to get through half the beer before I had to dump it.

I suspect that the finings I used where possibly contaminated or coincidentally I did something to ruin the beer. Could even have been a problem with the kit I was using at the time.

Regardless, I now no longer use any finings and am happy to wait for the beer to clear itself.

I may sometime in the future use them again but only time will tell.
