Is it possible to recover yeast from Guinness Foreign Extra Stout?
I have vague memories about reading that it was still possible to get yeast from Guinness processed in foreign lands.
A bit late now but I also saw in Tesco about two years ago large cans in multiple packs of Guinness brewed in Nigeria. When I had made up my mind to get some next time I was shopping they had all sold out . So I didn't get a chance to see if they had any viable yeast in them.
So , has anyone tried getting yeast from Guinness Foreign Extra Stout and what was the result ?
Cheers all.

I believe all Guinness's offerings are now pasteurised, great pity. So the answer is no - unfortunately, unless someone knows different.minesapint wrote:Is it possible to recover yeast from Guinness Foreign Extra Stout?

Re: Guinness Foreign Extra Stout Yeast
Hello again Dave.
I have a bottle of Guinness Export dregs and malt extract solution sitting on the shelf in the hope that the yeast would kick off.
All to no avail. Absolutely nothing.
I think you had the definitive answer to my question.
I waited a week to see if anything would happen.
On the bright side of things , as nothing has grown, I have proved that my disinfecting and sterilising methods are up to scratch.
I hope you are well on the mend now.
Cheers from Bob.

Yes I seem to recall 'normal' Guinness ceased to be bottle conditioned in the early to mid nineties and foreign export a couple of years later.
Thanks for the well wishes. Yes, getting back to health now, touch wood.
Best wishes
Dave

Don't know what's available to you over there, but Wyeast 1084 and White Labs WLP004 are descended from the Guinness strain. No doubt BrewLab has it too, albeit "anonymized." If you just need a high-attenuating UK strain for a foreign stout, S-04/Whitbread-B is fine.

Re: Guinness Foreign Extra Stout Yeast
Hello Seymour
The Malt Miller here in the UK stocks WLP004 ,
The sales caption on his site reads " From one of the oldest stout producing breweries in the world"
Sounds like Guinness to me .
Many Thanks.
