Take a look here its a starter I made with Whitelabs British Ale Yeast, and yep it most definitely has those grains of yeast. There is a discussion on the UK Homebrew forum about what could have caused it. Ray Ashworth came up with what I tink is the right answer. Basically if the pH swings a little too much towards the acid side (Eg saturated with CO2 -> Carbonic Acid) then the yeast clumps together. If you rack the beer (in your case) you force the release of CO2 the level of carbonic acid falls, pH rises and the clumps disappear.
