In search of English ale yeast heaven

Post by Clibit » Wed Nov 11, 2015 4:18 pm

After years of mainly making do with dry yeasts, with an occasional WLP002, and an odd Wy1469, I've decided to make use of my newly acquired redundant to check out some ale yeasts and see what works best for me. Maybe I'll find a house strain, or two. I really only make English beer styles, and the American versions of them. So maybe I want a nice estery strain, and a cleaner strain. We will see.

In my latest brew, the Nelson Motueka, I have used Wy1469 in half the batch and WLP006 in the other. I've also bought a Wy1728 to try soon.

I have a list to get through, which will cost a bit but I see it as an investment and an interesting project to focus on. But I wil also attempt to do some bottle culturing and maybe get some local brewery yeasts, I really want to try the Marble yeast, Holt's, and some from bottles like Young's and Hopback.

There are so many yeasts to try but I won't do them all. On my wish list atm, in addition to those above, are Whitelabs 004, 013 and 023 and Wyeast 1187, 1275, 1318, and 1332.

Has anyone else done this kind of thing? How did it work out? Do you have a house yeast or two and, if so, what caused you to select them?

Thanks.

WLP022 is available in Jan/Feb and is a great yeast. Are you going to grow and split the yeast. You can get 5/6 brews from each vial/pouch.

Thanks Dennis. I'll give 022 a try. Yes, I plan to grow and split them, but probably once I've chosen those I like best.

I can always send a 022 if it's needed.

I do but I shall grow some fresh as I need to split some more myself. Whilst it is not technically 022 it is the original strain that 022 reportedly comes from. Been going constantly in one descendant or another for at least 142 years.

If you can send that would be great, but I can always order 022 rather than burden you. Or Wibblers yeast?

022 and Wibblers are Ridleys. Except 022 was isolated and Wibblers is the descendant from the Ridleys brewery.

WLP023 goes great in anything dark but will also work in an English pale ale really well.

If you want the Marble strain, it's supposedly the Gales strain. Wyeast Northwest Ale 1332 was isolated from an American brewery but is supposedly originally from Gales.

Thanks Matt. That one's on the list, but should also be able to get hold of Marble yeast. I'll give 023 a go too.

Can't beat fresh yeast from a brewery.

I have been searching for English Ale Yeast Heaven for twenty-three years. :) The closest that I have come to nirvana is Young's Ram Brewery strain.
