Fermentum Mobile yeasts

Post by guypettigrew » Mon May 06, 2019 3:26 pm

Anyone tried these yet? The Malt Miller has started doing them and is offering them at a attractive discount.

I've just got a starter going with the FM11 'Heathery Heights' version. Supposedly good for standard English style bitters. Expecting to brew in three days.

Looks like you'll need a starter.
I'm just here for the beer.

Quick update; the starter got going really quickly and activity was over at about the 36 hour point.

Once in the wort, bubbles began coming through the blow off tube after about 4 1/2 hours. Now, 24 hours later, it's going like the clappers. Blow off bucket full of overflow.

Just off to open the fermenter and top crop the yeast ready for next time.

So, all is well so far. Now have to wait and see what the beer tastes like.

I'm on my second go of FM42 Old Rhine. Made a 1200 starter with it and it nearly climbed out of the flask. Was done in roughly the same time very cloudy and didn't drop that much when I crashed it. Made an alt beer started very quick as because when I got up the next morning and checked it there was beer and yeast all over the FV and it was set to 15c. I think I had the clean the FV 3 days in a row as it just kept blowing over. Massive krausen to say the least and when it was done it didn't want to fall out even when crashed. Beer is sitting lagering now samples hich have been cloudy but have tasted good will have to try it again soon.

Have you ever considered open fermenting once the krausen has formed ? You will find that you have no need for a blow off tube.

In some cases yes, though it depends on the setup in question. Open fermenting does reduce the volume of krausen, but (unless you have the leisure to beat it back regularly) it will still spill over very happily if there is insufficient headroom for it in the fermenter.
