I've got my hogsback yeast sample, a 400x (back-lit) microscope and two slides in a cup of water, straight out the kettle.
so what sort of thing should i look out for?
(yes, 'yeast' would be the obvious answer!)
using a microscope
hmmm...
filthy equipment unfortunately, but could see yeast hanging around in groups of 2-7. hardly saw any single cells so take that as encouraging.
obviously the more i looked the more the slide dried out until i couldn't make anything out.
I think i saw some bacteria - it looked like a + sign made up of half a dozen particles that looked like cooked long-grain rice. the whole assemblage was smaller than a yeast cell. Only saw one of these things.
lots of things that looked like flakes - impossible to focus on satisfactorily. would that be protein, dust or undissolved DME?
it would be interesting to see the same starter again in a couple of days, but sadly it's the last day of term and i'm on holiday until the new year

The bacteria would only really be visible if they was a decent sized infection, they will appear as tiny barely visible black dots that seem to be moving about by brownian motion.Gurgeh wrote:hmmm...

At least that what they look like when our tissue culture cells get infected
The flakes are probably coagulated proteins i would have thought
