Spliting a Whitelabs yeast

Post by Garth » Sat Jan 12, 2008 12:42 pm

I've read Jim's account of how to do this but that was with Wyeast, is Whitelabs any different?

How much DME/water ratio should I use?

how long is it before I can split it into 5 or 6?

once split can these be taken from the fridge, left to warm to room temperature and then pitched?

I'm intending on doing a Jim method starter today, too.

I would treat White Labs exactly the same. Use 100g of DME per litre of starter. Allow the starter to completely ferment out before splitting, probably around a week.

Whether you can pitch one of the mini starters depends on your batch size and the OG of beer you are making. My inclination would be to make another starter with the mini-starter.

Garth/mysterio,

I have split a Brewlab yeast sucessfully. I did it using Jim's method myself.

I believe that 500g of spraymalt in 8 pints will give an sg of around 1042, so if you wish to make a smaller amount you can scale it down to your requirements.

Here is the link to the post I started about my Brewlab yeast & how I split it.

I started it off in a milk bottle with 300ml water/40g spraymalt. After a couple of days I transferred it to a demijohn containing the remainder of the pack of spraymalt (460g) & made it up to 8 pints. I let it almost ferment out, the airlock had slowed down to 1 bubble every 45 second-ish, then I gently stirred it up to loosen the yeast which had settled on the bottom of the demijohn, then I transferred it to 12, 500 ml plastic bottles without priming them.

I have recovered the yeast from one bottle myself which I used on last weeks brew as shown Here, as you can see by the photos it is a lively yeast!

I made up a starter in a milk bottle by mixing 300ml of water with 40g spraymalt, zapping it in the microwave to boil it, then I left it (covered) to cool down to around 20c.

I had taken the plastic botle containing the yeast out of the fridge earlier to allow it to slowly come up to room temp. When they were at the same temp, I poured the spraymalt solution off the yeast, leaving the yeast in the plastic bottle. I then mixed it with the new spraymalt solution, poured it into a jug, then poured it into another jug a couple of times to areate it, than I transferred it into the milk bottle & fitted it with an airlock. It took off like a rocket, as can be seen on my above brewday link, it's good stuff!
