First try at home brew wine,

I have read instructions for my wine kit and it says wine wont be ready untill it shows a reading of 996, but i cannot get the reading below 1006. It has been in the demijon for 10 days and probrably manages a bubble every hour. It is in a room with a constant temperature of 21 deg. Does any one have some advice for a first timer? Thanks

I'd leave it until it stops bubbling completely... to get it down that low would make a very dry wine...

Thx retourrbx. Would you say that my wine would be ok if it stops bubbling and stays at around 1006?

All it means is the wine will taste a little sweeter, and won't have as much alcohol, otherwise it should be fine.

I'd give it a few more days.

Also if its only in primary, then will still have to rack it off into another demijohn, and this process will rouse the yeast left in suspension a bit and you will probably find it will drop a few more points in secondary.

Have you tested your hydrometer in water to make sure it's accurate...might be worth doing
