Hydrometer ?

For any alcoholic brew that doesn't fit into any of the above categories!

i think the little plastic cap comes off, you fill the airlock with water and then gas can come out but nothing bad can get in.

I've only started using airlocks very recently through and mine were second hand off a friend so i didn't have any tiny caps with mine.

Yeah the hydrometer looks like an oversized thermometer. My first hydrometer (they are far too easy to break) came with a fantastic chart of original and final gravity and made % calculation a simple takeaway sum.

Your dad's brew sounds excellwnt.

My uncle used to brew and he was not a man known for subtelty or for having a great number of remaining tate buds. He would often make brews at double or more strength and you always left his house feeling warmed.

Hey Celt (the Mrs says hello also),

The airlocks as Adam says don't need to have the plastic cap on, a lot of mine don't so I just stick a bit of cotton wool into the end to stop the bugs getting into the liquid and drowning (happens a lot with peach wine ), if you do have the caps then feel free to put them back on after filling the airlock :D

Yeah thanks C.P. I just replied to a message from the mrs.

Was gonna make a joke here about your 'birds' but thought better of it.
You are Irish so should work it out.

I thought the idea of the airlock was to let air out, but not in ? So a plastic cap would stop that ? Think I will go with the cotton wool for now.

So what are you brewing ? Do you do wine ?

By the way, I'm from the capital of Ireland. Liverpool !

the water is the airlock device...the plastic cap stops little critters and dust etc getting in there

hope this helps

WEIRD!

I replied with a long drawn out explanation of what to look for to emphasise the caps role in an air lock system but it's disappeared...

Oh well never mind

It's actually the capital of North Wales according to the Beeb ;)

As you've probably found, the Wilkos in St John's (and the other Wilkos i've been in) has a pretty basic supply of stuff, if you want a slightly more varied selection, Tranmere Homebrew Centre in Birkenhead would be an alternative to mail order. Then again by the time you pay the Wirral Tax (aka the tunnel toll) you'd have paid for half the postage from Hop Shop or Leyland Homebrew :

Aaah, you must be a Liverpool supporter ! :(

Yea, I heard about that one, there is a small place in London road, not far from lime st station.
However, its a real grot shop, and it stinks of catpiss !
Actually, I think the smell is from the old guy who owns the place who I think is about a 190 years old. Most of the brews are a year out of date tho I saw some brews of cherry wine not out of date.

Was in Wilkos the other day and the cylinder-with-a-foot that they sell as a hydrometer trial jar is white pvc - you can't see through the sides. Hmm, I thought.

Hmmm yeah, Welcome Mark, you should try it with red wine in it !
In very good light, you may be lucky with a large magnifying glass.
