First Turbo with added Nitrous
Well, I have never done it. Done the old counrty wines, meads and AG beers. I always keep an eye on the forums about TC and other fruit beer strength brews. I like the idea of experimenting.
Anyhow, I like ginger beer. I like Cider. But how to decide?
Fight!....... er no
Matts TC with Ginger:
10 litre Recipie:
9 Litres of Tesco Value Apple juice.
400g of ginger.
50g of sugar (it was just sat there so why not!)
1 Tea pot of PG (3 tea bags)
2 Sachets of mulled wine tea bags. (left over from chrimbo)
2 Large Green Chillis (Med/Hot strength)
1 Sachet of Ale Yeast (SB 12)
1 Sachet of Lager Yeast
Stuck the ginger in the food processer with 1 litre of juice. Blended. Boiled. Poured in to FV.
Stuck two chillis in the Food processor with 1 litre of juice. Blended Boiled. Poured in to FV.
Boiled remander in a large boiler added a bit of sugar, tea and mulled wine bags (strained bags out)(OG of the Juice was about 1040). I thought the sugar would bring it up slightly. It did on cooling to 20C it was up at 1052. Maybe too high. Especially as i predict it will ferment to around 1005 (or lower?).
Added ale yeast, very old packet in the cupboard. Nothing happened after 2 days. So searched the cupboard found some Lager yeast. In it went and now its fermenting slowly.
Smells lovely. Tastys spicy/firey.
Any comments welcome. Matt.

I did a crab apple and ginger beer once. It was disgusting. Have you drunk this yet?

No havent drunk it yet. its still fermenting. Was yours a similar recipie? What was wrong with yours?
Re: First Turbo with added Nitrous
It was similar except I didn't use apple juice - I pulped the crab apples and put that in. The problem was that it was too dry, too tart, too thin and pretty flavourless. I was pretty new to brewing back then, so I don't think I left it to mature long enough, didn't prime it properly and didn't add tannin. You seem to have covered these bases, but I'd still be a little concerned about the final flavour. When I imagine ginger beer and cider together (which is essentially what you have) I see the flavours clashing. The tartness of the apples and the zing and fire of the chilli and ginger... I'm not convinced

Re: First Turbo with added Nitrous
Well we will have to see.... I will update at point of bottling and probably a couple of weeks after.
I imagined it would taste ok because the apples would add some volume and depth to the ginger beer. The ginger would mask the potential thiness of the TC. Both playing off each others weakness.... maybe your right and they will both cancel out each others strengths!
I'll be fairly happy if its rubbish really, I enjoy experimenting more than drinking!

90% of my experimental brews are rubbish - but the fun is that one day you may stumble on something brilliantsimple one wrote:I'll be fairly happy if its rubbish really, I enjoy experimenting more than drinking!

Re: First Turbo with added Nitrous
Just started my first TC only basic recipe from this forum, apple juice (Tesco) and a cup of tea 2 bags no sugar or milk in the tea i hope that was right plus one teaspoon of yeast. Fermentation has started so all in all seems real easy if this is the case i will keep some on the go at all times and try the different recipes posted here, so could anyone please advise how long it will keep in pet bottles. Many thanks TT.

Re: First Turbo with added Nitrous
Well, firstly, yes your right. No milk and sugar! All your really wanting are the tannins in the tea. (when you make a really strong tea it will mark the sides of the cup, thats the sort of strength you want it)
Secondly, the length it keeps really depends on its strength. I would say 3-4% should keep for 4 months. 4-5% for about 6-8 months. If its wine strength 10-16 (or more)% then it can keep for anything up to 2-4 years. This is a really rough timeline, and can be altered by many factors.
There is no sell by/eat by/drink by dates. Its down to experimentation.
All alcoholic drinks have a peak... once they hit this they tend to slowly fade away. If it tastes off, it probably is!

Re: First Turbo with added Nitrous
Tasted from my FV. Boy! Maybe 2 chillis was 1 too many! Gravity down to 1018
Very spicy, I think the chillis and ginger have rolled over the TC and crushed it. But the background fermented juice has the body to complement the ginger beer.
I would say if you like ginger, chilli and cider. You may like this. But it hasnt finished yet, and i have had no big gulps yet, so we will have to see!
I will keep the post updated.

Re: First Turbo with added Nitrous
Well.... It fermented down to 1005 very sucsessfully. It was drinkable...... BUT....
Far too spicy. Too thin. And the aroma of the ginger, chilli and apple mix wasn't great either.
So instead of it causing me countless horrific trips to the lav, it went down there in one go!
Will you were right! Nevermind back to the drawing board.
Matt
