Wine kit help

Post by Chill » Tue Apr 28, 2009 3:52 pm

Hi all, just a quick couple of questions

While i was browsing the brewing section in wilkos today i spotted a youngs definitive cabernet sauvignon wine kit with no instructions reduced from 6.99 to a quid! too much of a bargain to pass up ofc so i bought this and a lil tin of there wine enricher.

Basically i just wanna know when to do a few things, ive got a pretty good idea as i once did a couple of wine kits many years ago im guessing its just

sterilise and clean everything as usual

chuck in both cans maybe heating them up to steralize,
top up with water (maybe with a bit of a campden tablet?)
add teh "super wine yeast compound"
add the stabalizer? dont really know when to add this
leave it to do its stuff, add the finings at the end and rack

so basically it seems to be when should i add the stabiliser?

thanks in advance

do a search for those instructions online - bet they come up somewhere

Stabiliser goes in once you are sure fermentation is complete. You need to ensure that it has finished, and you will probably need water to make it up to a gallon.

You do not need a campden tablet at the start with a kit.

cheers bud, its all bubbling away nicely now

what do the stabalisers actually do apart from well stabalise?

and what would you say the best amout of time to let these kinda kits condition for? is it the usual rule of the longer the better?

they help subdue the yeast so that it won't ferment say a sweet wine out to a dry one, and blow the bottles up that it's in either!

Sulphite acts as an aid to preventing oxidation of the wine.
