Well after about a week this has fermented down to .998 :D I've added potassium sorbate and a touch of campden to stop it there as I don't want it to dry out completely.

I just had the first sneaky taste and to my surprise, I didn't want to vomit. It just tastes like a dry white wine at the moment with a bit of a strange mouthfeel.. The Irn Bru flavour is definitely there in the aftertaste but it's very subtle. I'm hoping it will come through more when its cleared and aged a little. This may yet turn out to be a success.

Out of interest how much did a gallon of Irn Bru cost you? Cos I don't think they do the Irn Bru-Red Square Vodka thing anymore and I need something to clean my windows with...

It was on offer at ASDA, 3x 2-litre bottles for £3.50.. making this probably the cheapest gallon of piss I'll ever produce :D

That's disturbingly tempting, I've been looking for something interesting to blind my flatmates with :D

Nice idea there! All the missus drinks these days is Irn-Bru, maybe I'll have a bash, I reckon stopping the fermentation earlier could leave you with more of the bru taste.
BTW: Morrisons do their own Irn-Bru, aptly named Iron-Brew, which is about 50 pence for a two litre bottle, taste the same to me...

:) When my TC goes, I may need to have a bash at this, and like others have said, kill the fermentation sooner, so it tastes more like an alcopop.

this reminds me me of my neighbor. she was a prison warder for many years at a local prison and she was allways telling me how they brewed "hooch" in there cells!! LOL

take SOMETHING with sugar in it (apparently anything would suffice. pop, fruit juice, sugared water ETC) then add marmite (contains enough yeast apparently) and bread crumbs (also contains yeast) and ferment till done!! LOL

it smells AWFULL apparently (and i cant imagine it tastes much better), but it does the required job of getting the inmates pissed!!

i have a feeling this may turn out the same way, but seriously props for having a go!!

Befuddler wrote:Yes, this is a stupid idea. Yes, it's most likely going to taste like arse.. but sometimes when I have these ridiculous brainwaves, I just have to fart them into the world for all to smell. Anyway.. admit it, you're curious. Why else did you click on the thread? :=P

So basically, I'm going to ferment Irn Bru with wine yeast and see how hideous it is. I invite you all to share the experience by way of my words and pictures. The recipe is terrifyingly complex: it involves boiling the Irn Bru to decarbonate and drive off any preservatives, adding 10g of sugar per 100ml, then wanging some yeast in it.

I had absolutely no confidence that this would work at all, so I started off boiling just 200ml of Irn Bru for 10 mins, mixing in 20g of sugar along the way.. chucked this in a (sterilised of course) tropicana bottle with some Young's wine yeast and a dash of nutrient. No science here whatsoever, just threw it in by eye. To my amazement and slight horror, after 1 hour it looks like this:

We are go for launch.

I'm going to let this tiny amount ferment out then pitch it as a starter into a gallon batch. I will post the results here along with a detailed report of precisely how rancid it tastes.

I can almost feel your collective anticipation.

Have you tried this yet Befuddler, =P~

I think there's a few of us interested in where this has got too. Could end up being a whole new thread of fermented softies. :D :D :D

I've decided to have a bash at this.
I have 6litres of Lidl's finest Freeway Iron Brew awaiting to be boiled down before going in the DJ.
Second ingredient listed, SUGAR. Whoohoo.

I've given this long enough to fester now.. time for the verdict:

It's f*cking rank.

The original flavour of the Irn Bru is pretty much gone.. It tastes like white lightning with a hint of something sinister I can't even describe. It's alcoholic, but I wouldn't drink it by choice. I think I'll give it to my brother.

If anyone wants to have a bash at making this more successfully, you'll want to stop the fermentation much earlier than I did.. It needs some of the sugars left to carry the flavour.. and don't try to age it, it gets worse. :x

Jesus christ man! At least use the proper stuff! That cheap crap tastes like drain cleaner before you do anything to it.. I pity your tastebuds when you try to drink that.

Actually. Mine came out like a medium dry white wine. Good fizz. Very clear, definatley a gulping rather than sipping drink but no really heavy nasty after taste. It was slow to start fermenting but went off really well and stopped really quickly. I might actually have a bash at a Cola hooch next.
