Mango TC and Apple and Pear TC

Post by Manngold » Wed Jan 28, 2015 1:14 pm

Hey,

Made two 4.5L batches last night (only just found out my Demi's hold 5L exactly to the brim).

Mango TC:
4L of Mango Juice
Wilko's Gervain Yeast
Forgot to take gravity - any ideas?
No extra sugar (I am running the marathon this year and can't let alcohol effect my performance too much)

Apple and Pear TC
Apple and Pear juice 4L
Wilko Gervain Yeast
One apple and one pear diced and boiled in juice for 30 mins
Forgot gravity

Anyone got any ideas on gravity? I am thinking about 1.040?

Thanks

MG

Got the packs? They'll have the sugar per litre (or 100ml) on them, and you can look it up from that at several places online. Or the rule of thumb: 20g sugar per litre gives 1%

i fancy trying a TC, but with orange -- is it do-able, and what quantities should i use, looking at a gallon of orange and a straight apple one.
is it all juice or % juice and top with water

I think pure orange would taste bitter. I have only used apple and some cranberry mixed

keep us posted if you try some

I don't recall anybody saying they'd used orange as the adjunct to the aj in a tc. Orange does get used as a major part of Wursel'sOrangeWine though. I think it might be too acid for a tc.

apologogies for any misconstruance - when i said orange i didnt mean 100% ................ along the lines of 3 litres apple 2 litres orange, holding1 litre orange back for after initial lift off.
i understand the tannin bit but is there a need for the acids and nutrient if your gonna feed it sugar ?
cheers for the replies

Yes, you still need nutrient. It's like if you ate only sugar - you'd get scurvy, you need vitamins. Yeast needs nutrient, as well as the sugar is converts to alcohol for us.

If you do use orange, I wouldn't go more than 4l aj 0.5l orange. I suspect there's a reason there are so few (any?) commercial orange based alcoholic drinks.
(Apart from Corfiot liquer which is vile [and actually kumquats rather than oranges but hey])
