You don't need to core your apples. I run the whole thing through the scratter and then through the shredder. I make my cider exactly how my Victorian ancestors would have - except for using a little bit of electricity now and again. :oops:

I did manage to get hold of a Victorian hand-cranked apple scratter a couple of months ago for £30. The thing weighs around 130kg and is mainly cast-iron. I painted all the exposed surfaces with hammerite to try to minimise any iron getting into my cider and turning it green. I'll get a photo of it and post it here.
