ok, but how much Tea and tea bags for 7.5 liters? Does it change/help the taste much or just add tannins? (am I right in thinking they help clear the cider?)

dont know bout the clearing effect, but now you mention it mine are generally clear... three tea bags in a pint of water, or hot apple juice. leave them to seep for half hour or how ever long it takes u to do what ever it is u have to do... squeeze the bags and pour in

Hi Guys

Kegged a 20ltr brew the other day.

20ltrs of lidl AL, 4 Large Bramleys boiled in AJ, 1 packet of Youngs cider yeastie beasties.

Had about 4 weeks in the FV left in the garage. OG was about 1.050 and FG finished at about .998.

Smelt like a cider. Primed it with a bit of ordinary white sugar and put in a warmish room which it has been for about a week now.

Going to try it soon. Really I've done this because I expect it to turn into a reasonably drinkable cider but will give me a good starting point when it comes to adapting it to make something abit more interesting, without making something totally undrinkable by accident.

OK so cider has stopped bubbling quite suddenly...final reading today at 0.996 from 1.056......so now i'm guessing rack off...add more juice...then what leave to bubble some more then bottle...? Tried some tasted good but flat....is that normal?

Anyway when is comes to bottling how much sugar or juice should I use....teaspoon? half a teaspoon? and should this priming be done in the bottle or in the FV?

Thanks

Scott.

I wouldn't add more juice, with that reading it is ready to bottle so just add ½ teaspoon of sugar per 500ml to prime (well this much with beer so i'm guessing priming cider is the same)

The cider will be flat out of the fv as the gas has been escaping through airlock, it needs to be under pressure for the gas to dissolve into the liquid, this is done in the bottles and/or pressure kegs :) After a good few weeks they'll be 'sparkly' and if you leave them longer they will mature and the bubbles will get smaller and with the beers I've brewed they'll taste better too. This is my first TC so it's new ground for me here :)

And if my calculations are right then your alc will be about 7.8%
1.056 - 0.996 = 0.06 x 131 = 7.86

Just added the tea to the secondary and then added the TC and got it off the old yeast, checked the og which is now 0.000 smack on and it tastes quite good too, much much much better than any of those Coopers kits I've done. They have that extract taste I don't like while this tastes like cider. Might not be as bitter and sweet as a proper job but it's still good right out of the fv so i'm very happy. Can't wait til it's carbonated :)

Woohoo, it's so damn easy and cheap to make too :)

Two weeks ago I made the cider recipe as suggested by Dreadskin (viewtopic.php?f=13&t=16049)
I used the 1.5 liter packs, clear juice from Lidl, only 2lbs of honey and champagne yeast instead. OG 1.062
It stopped fermenting after 5 days. It had a SG 1.000. I then racked it to a secondary to get rid of the mushed up apple, added 1lb demerara sugar and more juice to make up to 19 litres. This fermented in about 24 hours. It now has a FG of 1.000
It has a nice yellow colour with hint of orange. It is cloudy. Tastes nice, slightly tart.

Now there are 2 questions I have on this:
Would it clear if I would leave it to mature for a few more weeks in the fermenter? Would it benefit the taste? (I don't mind cloudy cider)
Also, If I were to bottle what and how much will I prime it with? Can I use more apple juice to prime? or honey maybe? or just sugar?

I know there has been a mention of it in this thread, but has anyone regularly done a TC with spray malt added. Does it help it turn out ant sweeter? Perhaps it's just a short cut to brewing "snakebite" ? What is a good ratio to add.......any takers?

i do it, it takes the 'edge' off the taste and makes it taste more like commercial cider. i used 500g of light in 20 ltr with 300g of brewing sugar in my recent lot but only 8 ltr of asda apple juice and 12 ltr water. it wasn't very strong at only 4%ish but it allowed me to flavour it. vimto cider anyone, its like juice.

next time i will use 1kg of beer enhancer with 12ltr of apple and 8ltr of water.

Thanks B M. I will give it a go. I often use vimto or blackcurrant in it to give a really easy drinking cider with a berry taste to it.
