Cheers DRB. I think I'm going to give your ginger beer method a try.

Just started my ginger beer plant. I used fresh ginger root instead of ground ginger. Just chopped some up and chucked it in! It's bubbling away nicely and smells great. I'm looking forward to see how this turns out...oh joy, lashings of ginger beer! :P

There's a bit of a guesswork here DRB, but I'm finely chopping up approximatley a level teaspoon. Not sure if you need more or less when using fresh ginger compared with ground ginger?

Yes, this crossed my mind too. It's the plants second "feed" this pm, so I'll put double in. To be honest it is a bit of an experiment. Cheers DaaB.

This is also going to give you a completely different taste AFAIK.

I have no idea what part of the plant dried ginger (powdered) comes from. I know that I much prefer things like the Jamaican Ginger Beer which specifically states it uses root ginger.

I think that it might be time for me to give Ginger Beer another try, this time with some slight differences in the bottling process (leaving those caps loose to begin with!!) I'll also filter my 'plant' using a coffee filter and sieve rather than the ballsed up method of a clean sock - just made a mess!!

Has anybody tried making the plant with sultanas instead of yeast? One method is to use (IIRC) 6 sultanas (or is it raisins?) and the wild yeast will do its job!

I probably have enough bread yeast left over to use that anyway!!

I used a coffe to filter, but the small bits kept blocking the filter, making it slower to go through( if that can be acheived) resulting in liquid staying longer in filter making it soggie then it holes out on you making you start again.Just use 2 pop sock stretched over a funnel pour through a few times, less hastle and a lot quicker.
Thats my theory anyway. ;)
