Manngold wrote:Thanks WA. So I guess that I just stick the syphon in the top of my crude demijon, and transfer it to another that way, leaving the sediment etc in the first? This links in with another question I have about my first brew. I am bottling this eve, my FV has a tap, can I just pour it directly from the tap? I dont have another FV to syphon off to, and dont have a syphon to be able to do it to. Is this ok?
Thanks for all your help.
Manngold,
I`ve never bottled straight from a FV with a tap so I can`t help you there.
You`ve probably finished bottling by now anyway!
Are you bottling Cider or Beer? Can you see that the sediment is below the tap? Otherwise you are stuffed and will be drawing sediment into the bottles. If I was doing it from the tap, put sugar in the bottles first, don`t splash the Brew into the bottles, try to hold the bottle at an angle and run the Brew down the inside of the bottle. Leave an inch at the top of the bottle.

Hey WA just about to start. I couldn't fit the little bottle filler to my Fv. Do I just need to be careful? It's beer by the way.

Hello Everyone,
After reading second2none`s recipe for this, I put 2 on today. I`ve never made one with water before because last year I read a post that used Apple Juice and 200gr Sugar.
I think that post was by second2none as well.
Followed recipe to the letter, 1 Raspberry Syrup the other Raspberry and Lemon Syrup.
The SG at 22deg was 1058. If this gets down to 1000, it`s going to be a lot more than 5 - 5.5% as stated in recipe! :D
When I used 200gr sugar and AJ, the TC was too strong at 9%, I don`t use any sugar at all now and they still come out at 6.5 - 8% depending on number of Syrup bottles used.
Bottled up my Raspberry TC made with Nutmeg, Ginger and Cinnamon today. Beautiful Taste!
2 Bottles Raspberry Syrup, top up to 20Lts AJ. 1 Tsp Nutmeg, 1 Tsp Ginger, 1 Tsp Cinnamon. 14 Days in FV.
SG @ 22deg 1052. FG 1000 ABV 7.1%
All bottled up! :D
Image

So while I was feeling workish, I knocked up a Passion Fruit TC 20Lts. 6Lts Passion Fruit Juice with 14Lts AJ. SG @ 22deg 1050. :D

Passion fruit sounds great WA. How did your mango version turn out?

I got this on at the weekend. came out at 1.052 seems quite high to me! Do I need to top up with more Apple juice after a week or so, or can I use water to lower the overall abv? When it comes to bottling, could I theoretically prime the bottles with Apple juice to make it more appley?

Enjoying some lovely ales at the moment!

Manngold,
I haven`t tasted the Mango TC because its` only been in bottles 10 days. I will try one on Wed. The one I made last year was Bloody Lovely Mun!
What did you make this weekend? I can`t comment unless I know what you`ve made! :D

Hey WA. I was quite busy this weekend!! :D

Spent friday night bottling my Woodford Wherry (managed to get 43 pints, as I added to much water).
Saturday made about 4.5 litres of TC. Used a single bottle of the Raspery Syrup, 3.5 litres of apple juice, a mug of tea, and water. It was really strong at first, so took some more aj out and added water. There is a lovely krausen on top, and it is a dark red colour.
Sunday I put the Milestones 'Shine On' brew on. I have done it exactly as per the kit, except I brewed it to 22 litres, and it came out at 1.040 - 1.042 as per recommended instructions.

Brewing took over my weekend, my kitchen, and my spare room.

Manngold,
Good for you on your Brewday!
After day 7, top up the TC with AJ but still leave approx 25mm at the top. I batch prime mine with 45gr sugar before bottling. I haven`t put AJ in the bottles so can`t help you there. Did you remember to add the Yeast?
Did you read the post by `Oldbloke` that I mentioned last week? It really is worth reading!
Glad you mentioned `Shine On`, I forgot about mine! Just Dry Hopped it with 50gr Cascade! :D

Yup, yeast went in! I used wine yeast I think (it was the cheaper option in Wilko's) and I also used a yeast supplement.

Ah ok about the aj. I was only thinking as it is going to be quite strong, and I wanted to try to lower the overall abv and perhaps give me an additional pints worth or two, I was thinking of having about 100 - 150 ml aj per bottle to prime. What good does topping up the FV do in 7 days. Could I possible use water for this, I dont want to add any more sugar into it, or is the sugar a necessity at that stage?

What colour did you mango TC turn out at? That sounds luch by the way!

If I wanted a big batch (40 pints) for August, what would be the best time to start it?

Manngold,
Topping up the FV after 7 days is just to fill it up! Fermentation will still be going on but not so vigourously. Water will be OK to top up.
The Mango TC is a Very Clear Straw colour (just like urine)!
If you want some for August, make it now. It will be perfect by then. In fact, it will be so perfect that you won`t have any left,
so you`d better make 2 Brews! :D :D

Hi WA. Yes I did, and it answered alot of questions. Thanks for that link. I find that I have taken so much information in, that I forget it all! There is just so much going on!

Am I correct in thinking that raspberry syrup is good because it has no E numbers in it, or is there something else. It got me really thinking at the weekend at other different juice combinations. Is the requirement really that you just need to have enough sugar for the initial yeast to react to? If so, could I experiment with some other things, for example a natural strawberry jam, or would that not work?

It's good because it doesn't have any preservatives in it. If you wanted to experiment with other juices that are consentrated and they have preservatives in them then you will need to boil them for 20 minutes or so. I have read somewhere in here of people using Robinsons no added sugar squash. Boil it, add some sugar and mix with water. Been a few good reviews of it. I'll have to try and find it.

Have been thinking about making this stuff following WA's recipe. Rather than adding the raspberry stuff at the beginning I was thinking of adding it to a secondary so it stays really fruity. Everytime I've brewed TC with other flavours it changes the taste of what I've added and doesn't turn out how I was expecting it. Still tastes nice but not what I was after. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Good link Shaun!
If you follow this recipe, you will get something like 7.5% - 8% at the end.
I just made 2 TCs following the recipe by `second2none` on the first page of this post, both came out at 7.9%. It`s a lovely drink, you think it`s
so nice and fruity that you keep drinking it then wonder why you have fallen in the flowerbeds at 4 in the afternoon at your BBQ! :D
If I was you, I would reduce the sugar as you go along, ie,300gr, 200gr, 100gr, etc. Do 4 DJ`s back to back for a comparison.
Just looked back through my BrewBook and I found these results...
1Lt Blueberry juice, 3.5Lt Apple Juice, 50gr sugar, 5.4%
1Lt Pomegranate Juice, 3.5Lt AJ, 75gr sugar, 5.7%
1Lt Pom Juice, 3.5Lt AJ, 100gr sugar, 6.3%
1Lt Pom Juice, 3.5Lt AJ, 200gr sugar, 7.4%
All above followed usual recipe for Yeast, Nutrient, topping up after 7 days etc.
Make 4 at a time with 4 different Juices. Takes no time at all and the results are well worth it! :D :D

Hello Everyone,
Mango TC has had 2wks warm, put into the shed today for 2wks cool.
Tasted a small bottle ( as you do ), It is Super Clear and it tastes Bloody Lovely Mun!
This has only had 14 days in the bottle but I have been drinking these after 17 days on previous brews in the bottle and it didn`t last long! :D
Beer Pig or Be a Pig? I don`t know what MrsAles is on about half the time! :D :D
