I can't make up my mind whether to do this or not
I've got 5 gallons of TC on the go.
I'm just about to throw in the last 5 litres after initial fermentation but have just realised that I'm out of apple juice. I have however got 5 litres of prune juice.
I can't be bothered to go to Lidl so was wondering about using this instead. The sugar content looks good (higher than apple juice) but I thought I'd just check if anyone else has tried it first.
Anyone???????

My grandad used to make wine from dried prunes so I don't see why you couldn't use prune juice.
Mind you my dad used to look like one of those 'gurners' when drinking it so maybe it wasn't too pleasant.
I'm sure it would keep you regular though

If there are preservatives in the prune juice you will likely be inhibiting yeast fermentation.
If you try it, please let us know the results, both in fermentation and in taste.
Secondary FV: As yet unnamed Weizenbock ~7%
Bulk aging: Soodo: Grocery store grape juice wine experiment.
Drinking: Evan Williams bourbon, Dewar's Scotch (white label), VO Canadian whisky. Various Sam Adams beers.

Well - I've thrown it in
There weren't any preservatives listed so I should be ok.
It's certainly made it look much darker and the smell is intriguing
I'll let you all know how it goes - if I don't like the taste I can always sell it as an alcoholic laxative

I remember an episode of "Star Trek - the Next Generation" in which Worf is bored by SynthAle, and prefers to drink prune juice, saying something like, "
This is a
warrior's drink!"
Would that be a good name for your new TC:
warrior's drink ??

It depends a lot on how much you actually like the taste of prune juice.
I'm just here for the beer.

A few more days and it'll be ready to bottle up - I just had a sample and I reckon it's going to be quite a good one to drink.
However, I've just realised that I've got nothing to put it into.
Does anyone know anywhere on line where I can buy the gallon (5 litre) containers you get cider in from the local farm? I found one site but the minimum order was rather silly

Not ideal but buy a Tosco 5ltr water bottle, pour the contents away and keep it in a dark place (and don't over-carbonate...)?

IF YOU work in an office or know someone that does, get them to 'liberate' the big bottles used for the water coolers. i use them and they are great. the tops for the big five gallon glass fermenters fit them perfectly

OK then - the tasting notes!
It's a very dark cider, almost looks like a real ale.
Much more body than the other TC's I've made. A hint of apples with something else there that you can't quite put your finger on - you would never guess it was prunes
It came out at around 8% and is extremely quaffable - I'll definitely make it again.
And before anyone asks - I had three pints on Monday night and there have been no "
adverse effects"

The recipe:
20l Apple juice (the cheapest I could find)
5l Prune juice (was on offer in Sainsburys)
1 Bag of sugar
1 Tsp Youngs wine yeast
Chuck the AJ & sugar in a fermenter & add the yeast. Wait for it to die down & then add the Prune juice
Simple
