What equipment and ingredients are needed for TC?

Post by b.all » Wed Feb 04, 2009 7:49 pm

It's my girlfriends birthday soon and i want to get here all the stuff to start doing TC as part of her present as she's a big cider fan, particularly the slightly posher ciders like Green goblin. can anyone recommend where to get the basics to start here of and which extra chemicals or yeast nutrients are needed? also, which yeasts and juices work best for it?

Thanks.

I am not sure the words "posh" and "TC" can be used in the same sentence.

Rough maybe, harsh, Tart,or OMG thats dry!

These are all words that HAVE been used to describe my TC.

They are usually said with a husky voice and one eye closed. :?

Sorry forgot to answer your Q.. :)

All you need really is a 1 gallon container, (5L plastic water from tescos will work)

A balloon for an air lock and a siphon tube to get it out when its finished.

I just used basic sainsburys apple juice and yeast for my 1st TC and it was the best I have made so far.

Hehe yeah posh is definitly not something involved with TC.
And the description of one eye closed an husky voice was my mate the other day when i inflicted a pint of TC on him, Made him drink the lot the cheeky bugger. Fun times.

As for ingredients all id say is keep it simple. I just go for pure juice an yeast an let it do its job. then use another carton of juice to prime if bottling. Ive not quite reached the stage of supping it from a demi yet

dont forget to sterilise your kit first.

You also need - the stomach of King Henry VIII, the balance of Man on a Wire, and the ability to sit with your head inside a metal dustbin with Keith moon playing on the outside of it.

Hi Dred!
i was gonna stick an apple in my next one to see if it tasted different/better!
what if you reuse the yeast though- do i just leave it in there for the next brew or do the bits need fishing out?
won't it go mouldy after a while?
luving this turbo cider game - but i haven't tasted any yet!!!!

IF YOUR using a bramley apple it will taste better. the way to do it is to grate/blend your apple, stick it in with a cup of strong tea. then top up with apple juice to 3/4 full. if you want it to be stronger, add 250-500 grams of brown sugar, or normal sugar or even better honey. b ut be warned its powerful stuff then. after a week or so the apple (and dead yeast) will fall to the bottom. rack it off( ie suck out all the good liquid at the top, leave the gunkl at the bottom) refill it to the top with more juice. leave it for a week and more gunk will form at the bottom. this is just dead yeast. rack off again. now you can either bottle now or refill it again and wait some more. when you rack it off the second or third time leave the stuff at the bottom and IMMEADIATLY refill with the tea, blended apple andf juice and off you go again. do not leave the gunk for an hour or whatever as then it might get infected. however if you have plenty of yeast (lets face it it is cheap) then just wash the demi john out and start afresh.

then put on choas uk, 'i love cider' . put it on loud!
