I agree.Chris-x1 wrote:Gravity and patience is as good as it gets and is usually all that is required by homebrewers for whom time isn't money.
I've had some luck with gelatine and with sparkolloid, but they have different targets, so read up first. As always, YMMV.
Secondary FV: As yet unnamed Weizenbock ~7%
Bulk aging: Soodo: Grocery store grape juice wine experiment.
Drinking: Evan Williams bourbon, Dewar's Scotch (white label), VO Canadian whisky. Various Sam Adams beers.

Bah! There is that 'P' word again.
I have more than enough Gravity but I have yet to find a decent place to buy Patience. You can't even get it on ebay....

Re: best finning agent
when i get pissed of waiting a dse or two of bentonite always does the trick. and i aint noticed any 'earthy' flavours yet
Re: best finning agent
I use pectolase in my apple pulp before pressing, which guaramtees a clear cider (almost). Otherwise I use bentonite in wines (even kit wines I dont use their clearing agent) or, more often than not, I simply dont bother.
Re: best finning agent
So if i'm doing a cider kit should i put pectalose in with the mix to help keep it clear? and can this be done with lager?
if they're still cloudy before bottling it sounds like bentoline is the best thing to add to clear it, again does this apply to lager as well?
got plenty of time and patience it's just i've already put ayoungs finning agent in my lager and after 4 days now its still really cloudy, i'm planning on racking it off this weekend anyway so that should make a diifference

Re: best finning agent
Ive tried finnings and gelatine and out of the two i much prefer the gelatine. keeps in the cupboard for ever, one sachet is right for one brew , clears well and leaves no taste. the goo left behind is pretty easy to clean out of the barrel as well. isinglass smelt and looked like something that had been scraped off some bed sheets , it didnt clear at all and I had all the faff of keeping it in the fridge etc, it was also more expensive.
Re: best finning agent
Anyone on the above re bentonite and lager? racked it off into a barrel last night and i'd describe it as looking 'thick' rather than cloudy but was hoping it would be a bit clearer than it is but suppose i'm being impatient more than anything, will see how it is in a couple of weeks, if it is still 'thick' looking then will bentonite make any difference and be the better option or will it be as good as it gets?
Re: best finning agent
Can someone tell me how much bentonite to use for a 5 gallon batch? In teaspoons if possible
Re: best finning agent
the plastic container say 1 teaspoon per gallon. dont worry if it doesnt work straight off, you can always do it again after you have racked it again
