My First Cider

Post by DaveR » Thu Dec 07, 2006 2:02 pm

Enough Turbo cider!, here's some pics of my first attempt to make cider. Not quite in the same league as Jean-Yves and no doubt many others, but so far it tastes quite reasonable. This is the apple variety used:

- no idea what they are, I filled a carrier bag of them when out walking the dog in the countryside. They're a bit small at about 2inches, taste sweet but sharp as well. Hmmm. They were left in the garage for a couple weeks before they were crushed using the wifes food processor with the potato ricer doo dah. I then hand squeezed the pulp, not ideal but this is only a test really and put the juice into the fermenting vessel with a light sprinkle of Youngs cider yeast. This is how it looks after 6 weeks:

sorry for image quality, used the phone's camera. Incidently, the bottle in the background is "village" cider - a few blokes in the local pub have so many apple trees in their gardens that this year they decided to have a bash at making cider. I think they got about 300litres from about 3/4 of a ton of apples, basically any apples they had. I've not tasted it, yet .......

Last night I transferred my cider into secondary:

and of course had a little taste :D a sort of medium-dry but will be left for as long as possible. Not exactly a conventional way to do cider but so far so good.

Cheers,
Dave

DaaB

I've been apple tree spotting on the journey to work as well  . Found quite a few sloe bushes too!.

We've got a juicer but its a bit small - the food processor was better.
I think a press is a must to get all the juice.

A man after my own heart! :P

I have to admit, however, I paid up the £50 quid and got a new phone.

I'm glad to say it doesn't have a camera on it.

Would be great to browse around his house though, he's got some great gadgets including a homemade colour TV!

I also agree with his manifesto.

Sound man!

I find it disgraceful that electrical goods break down today after a few years, or are considered obsolete as soon as they are made, especially when they'll just get chucked in a landfill and add to environmental damage.

My parents have a 20 year old wooden tv (sans remote 8) ); how many tvs am I going to get through in that time? (erm, none, I don't have a tv but you get my point).

I'm voting for him.

Where do I tick. He needs to be educated about priming and secondary though!

No TV??

I find it strange that somebody who owns a computer wouldn't have a TV (unless you have a TV card in you computer then that is okay :)) How do you watch eastenders? (I try to avoid eastenders and every other soap!)

I find it strange that my mate doesn't own a computer (yet he has an IPOD and digital camera) - I let him off as he is planning on buying one soon.

but that's too easy, the fun with watching Emmerdale is the thrill not knowing if or when you are going to see lovey rack :P

It's nice to see some people still like a challenge in this digital day and age

If my telly blew up I'd be tempted not to bother replacing it.

But now I've got the heads-up about Emmerdale then perhaps I would 8)
