TC Noob questions?

Post by DC » Mon May 11, 2009 12:24 pm

H all, I am looking at making some TC and have a few questions.

1. How much sugar do you guys normally add to a batch of TC
2. Whats the best sort of yeast to use
3. How long does a batch of TC normally take to ferment out.

Cheers DC

1) Depends how high you want the ABV to be, if you want rocket fuel, perhaps 500 grams, maybe more depending what you want.
2) Wine/Champagne yeast.
3) Mine take around a month, but thats because i use tonnes of sugar! Normally within a week or to, it is afterall Turbo Cider.

Hi all, Thanks for the prompt replies, I was not sure how much sugar to add to a gallon of TC ! Just recently started a ginger wine for SWMBO and its been going 3 weeks now after adding 2lb of sugar ! I will make up the TC juice and measure the OG and see what it is before deciding wether to add more sugar ! Dont really want the TC to be mega strong  I would rather have it at a lesser ABV and ferment quicker than have it blow ya head off strong and take 2 months to ferment out.

Cheers DC

If this is your first one Id suggest just using plain applejuice. Dont add anything (other than yeast ofc) That way you will have a benchmark product. You can then complicate things on your next one.. i mean tweak it for improving flavour

Ive yet to get to the tweaking stage myself, I make all my apple tc with just AJ an yeast. 1 reason for this is cos im lazy an this really is minimum effort. 2, I like the taste as it is. Altho at some point i am going to try Dreadskins recipe to see the difference

As for yeast im a heathen an use bread yeast.

Hi if youhave a look through the thread
Turbo Cider Recipes, Methods and Taste Collection.

That'll give you an idea what other people are brewing. Mine took about 2 weeks to ferment as a benchmark.

Hope that helps!

As already stated I'd start with just apple juice and yeast.

You can always mess with the strength (add additional sugar), the body (add tea), the flavour (add grated apples) or the taste (difference juices) later.
