Post by jac » Mon May 18, 2009 3:53 pm

after reading quite a few threads on here i reckon i need the following (correct me if i am wrong)

fermenting vessel = a 5 litre water thing from tesco
5 litres of apple juice from concentrate nothing else added (eg smart price or lidl)
yeast to make it work
500ml coke bottles to put it in
tubes to siphon
balloon to shove over top with hole in

method

bung everything in fv
wait a week or so
bottle wait another week or so

drink and get rat arsed

edit:- pics will follow when i know how to do it

more or less (although you may want to wait for one of the tC guru's)

To give you an idea my firsts was like this...
5lt fv (tesco's water bottle (you don't even need a ballon I made my first with the lid loosly on))
4lt apple juice (actually used 3lt and 1 of apple and elderflower all they had worked pretty well i reckon)
300g brown sugar
Teaspoon of cinemon
1 Cup of cold strong tea brewed with 1 tea bag until cold.
1 grated normal supermarket apple.

Sanitise the FV and a jug...

Heat 1ltr of apple juice add cinamon grated apple and dissolve suger (if you use any).
Pour into FV with tea and the rest of the apple juice... pitch yeast (safale 05 I used) leave for 5 min give it a swirl put lid on and forget about until the apple sinks (2+ weeks) ... result 10% cider and very drinkable (especially with a splash of apple juice over ice) ... top notch.. just put another 9lts on!

lol Bung it in to the Fv! You won't need a whole pack for 4-5lts... 1/3 tops half if you want to be sure.

1) Don’t ferment too hot – downstairs loo is a good place if you live in a 3 bed wimpy home
2) Chuck some sugar in to get the alcohol content up
3) A proper airlock is 75p if you can find a brewshop
4) Don’t forget to prime each bottle with ½ teaspoon of sugar if you want fizzy cider
5) If you don’t have a hydrometer then check the fermentation has finished (it might take 3 weeks) when there is no more air AT ALL coming through the “Lock” and have a sip and if you can taste any sweetness the fermentation hasn’t finished.
6) Follow dreadskins advice and grate a bramley (or Spartan) in (some people add tea etc but don’t worry about that for now)
7) If you want your missus to still loive you, leave pitching the last litre of juice in until after 2 or days so you don’t get loads of stuff bubbling everywhere
8) Chuck the whole yeast sachet in if you aren’t using the rest of it for a while as your unused yeast becomes useless very quickly once open.
9) Don’t forget to sanitise the siphon and ballon and coke bottles etc. For a beginner with no access to a brewshop use Milton sterilising tablets (in the baby aisle) and rinse well.
10) Yes, get rat arsed and fall over!

....of course a real expert will tell you its not air that comes up through the airlock - its C02......
