Bottling Turbo Cider

Post by Hoppkins » Fri Feb 23, 2007 12:37 pm

I've got a turbo cider that has done very nicely in primary and tastes excellent. It's gravity is down to 1.005.

It's still got some airlock activity. I just recently aqquired a bottle capper and a load of bottles.

When is it safe to bottle this? I want to bottle it and leave it for a while. I figured with my limited knowledge that bottling it now would allow it to continue fermenting and carbonate a bit in the bottle.

Will the bottles shatter under the stress of it fermenting still?

They are mostly shop bought bottles or youngs beer bottles.

To be honest, if it is still fermenting then I would be cautious about bottling.

I suppose you could always add a few campden tablets (I think 1 per gallon is sufficient) which would kill off the yeast. The downside of this is that it would obviously effect priming.

Even if the bottles do cope with the pressure, opening them might be a problem and cause gushers due to the excessive pressure.

Right you are. I'll leave it a while then :)

Thanks Pie ^^
