demijohn hydrometer readings

demijohn hydrometer readings

has anyone got ant tips on how to take hydrometer readings in demijohns as im finding it difficult not to loose the hydrometer inside

Nope, I don't think that there is an easy way :?
Ideally you need a trial jar and a turkey baster to fill the trial jar from the demijohn.
Or you can pour your sample into the trial jar and out again.

tried it with more liquid in the demijohn but its still no good

I use a turkey baster and a sample jar to get it out. Tricky but it works and you dont get much of the liqour out.

tie a length of cotton or fishing line to the top of the hydrometer and put it in the demijohn allowing cotton to be slack but not allowing it to go in to your brew, take the reading and pull out with the cotton. the cotton is so light it should make virtually no difference to the accuracy of the reading
