Can I just throw yeast at apple juice?
Re: Can I just throw yeast at apple juice?
I've got an IPA to do next then I'll prob have a blast at adding some strawberry or something to a TC.
Re: Can I just throw yeast at apple juice?
I'm shitting myself! I've bought a bottle of cider to my parents for my sister and as the days gone on I've watched the bottle getting harder & harder! & now I'm stressing about the other 8 bottles at home possibly exploding while I'm not there!! How much pressure can a pet bottle take before going bang?!

Don't worry mate those pet bottles can take a fair bit of pressurebigdave wrote:I'm shitting myself! Re: Can I just throw yeast at apple juice?
Just got home and a sample I left in a trial jar with the hydrometer has dropped a further 10 points since 9am this morning!!... Think I'll be getting them in the fridge now. lol
Re: Can I just throw yeast at apple juice?
Drank the sample! Mmmmm.... Not too dissimilar to old rosie! Can't wait to see how it is in 3 weeks.
Re: Can I just throw yeast at apple juice?
Decided to try a bottle. It's so heavily carbonated that on opening the bottle, the yeast in the bottom of the bottle gushed back in to suspension!! Cloudy pint for me then!! lol
Tastes quite good thou. lol

Re: Can I just throw yeast at apple juice?
Reading back on your post I think you bottled it too early, hence the over carbonation, TC can go down to 1.000 or lower in some cases, that's 20 points of gravity which is a lot of CO2.bigdave wrote:Decided to try a bottle. Re: Can I just throw yeast at apple juice?
I was aiming to keep it naturally sweet (which I have) but it needed to hit the fridge about 4 hours earlier.

Re: Can I just throw yeast at apple juice?
The fridge-it method seems a poor compromise to me; next brew you'd be better off running with a nottingham ale yeast and pimping the sugar levels to the 1060 range (as the ale yeast would struggle to get the content below 1010-1015 at that OG) - meaning that fermentation is actually finished instead of dormant.bigdave wrote:I was aiming to keep it naturally sweet (which I have) but it needed to hit the fridge about 4 hours earlier.
My Cinnamonator has just finished at 1014 (well, its been stable for 2 days..one more reading to go) from 1054 on a nottingham - and its quite sweet Just leaves me with the question of carbonation to deal with as I dont think any yeast left alive in the brew has enough cahooonas to deal with any more sugar - think im going to pitch a little extra yeast with the bottling sugar and hope for the best
Next time I'll monitor the SG and bottle at 1020

Do you add any gelatine or fining agent when bottling your ciders?

Re: Can I just throw yeast at apple juice?
No, but im a patient man - my TC's generally drop clear after 7-10 days at 15-18 degrees conditioning in my back bedroom. I think they do have a tendancy to a slight cloudiness but the last batch was crystal after I discovered the wonders of Pectolase
I've used chitosan before but the fact it smells like a rotten haddock made me think twice about putting it in anything else i drink If you want to experiment, then try it and report back !

I think chitin comes from shrimp shells, so your remark about the smell is apt.

Will give Pectolase a blast on the next lot. Is there anything I can add to counteract the acidity of Turbo Cider? I've always suffered with acid reflux and it makes it much much worse.
