I have a limited understanding of wine I'm afraid, but certainly what I've heard of with regards to storing beer in plastic is you need to make sure the plastic is not permeable to oxygen. Apparently some plastic bottles can let oxygen through slowly over time, and I think in wine this leads to a cardboardy taste. That said, I suppose it all comes down to how long you intend to leave it! I would have imagined you could get away with 6 months storing it in plastic, but once opened, then I think wine does have a certain shelf life.
As a suggestion for others to comment on, would there be an issue in using the plastic bottles to temporarily store the wine before moving to glass, or possibly just leaving in the demijohns a couple more weeks?

Re: Storing wine in plastic bottles ?
ISTR Moley on the other forum sometimes uses PETS to store his wine and there's not much he doesn't know about making the stuff.
Once bottled though I wouldn't open it just to transfer to glass, only when I wanted to drink it. You want it kept well away from oxygen.
If 2l is a bit big for one session, I suggest just leaving it in the demis until you get your glass, or smaller PETs. Maybe rack it if you have a spare demi and it has much sediment.

Re: Storing wine in plastic bottles ?
I have used old 1l water bottles (morrisons flavoured water) to store wine in, but its never around to long for any possibility to have an impact.
I had plumb wine for around 6 months in these bottles with no ill affect.

Re: Storing wine in plastic bottles ?
I have used the 500ml coopers ox-bars with great results. I would just try it. Worst case the wine is average because of it, I don't think it would make a wine undrinkable per say. I have drank wines that have been open for weeks and weeks and while you can tell the difference between start and finish its not earth shattering. I can only assume that kind of effect is as bad as it will get with oxygen break through with a PET.
If it works you have saved a ton of cash. If it doesn't it's not the end of the world.

If its ok in the DJ just leave it there till you get the glass.
To be safe you'd need to make sure that the bottles, if plastic, were indeed not oxygen permeable. PET/polyethylene terathelate.
Plastics are ok for beers and ciders etc as they're lower alcohol and its potentially short term storage. So if you'd rather not pi55 around with it and don't know how soon you expect to drink it, just wait until you've got the glass - a month or two won't hurt it.....
