My first ever batch of Turbo Cider nearly completed..

Post by Marc » Thu Aug 30, 2007 12:13 am

Ingredients used..

5 litres of Tesco Apple Juice
1 Jar of honey
250g of sugar
Allinson Dry Active Yeast

--------

Im not entirely sure iv done it right but it smells really nice & strong! The yeast I used is baking yeast, but on the back of it, it says "Can also be used for wine making and home brewing" so I thought why not!

The bubbles are slowing down after 11 days and theres some really thick sediment at the bottom. The cider isnt clear at all though. Will it fall clear after I rack it off?

How does all that sound to you experts..?

Hi My t.c fell clear less than 24 hours after v slow bubbling..first 5l used up.. second 5l reacting exactly the same way..i have not used the honey

((((4l aj 500 g tate n lyle then 500ml aj added three/four days in after first flush of rapid bubbling)//youngs wine yeast tub//nutrient)))))..

.......recall someone posting that it causes poor clearing..hope you enjoy the stuff mine was bloody dry ..need some more experimenting to acheive my taste..2nd and 3rd batchs will be ready this week ....

will start 3 more next week ...but will consider stopping one early ..?

I be interested in hearing how they finish off as I'll looking to start my first batch (and first ever brewing!) probably this weekend.

Anyone got a method to stop the finished TC being too dry?

The easiest way I've seen is to dilute it with a little of the apple juice you used. This gives an appley kick with some sweetness and the TC is strong enough in terms of abv to take a little dilution. Not tried it though, and it takes away from the awesomeness if you have to add stuff to the bottle of pop you've got when it's in the glass. Some suggest adding a sweetener like saccharine, but this can allegedly make it taste funny.

Honey does, apparently, create a cloudier brew which takes longer to clear.

When you come to rack it off the trub try priming your bottles with 30ml (per pint) of apple juice - this takes away some of the dryness and adds back a little apple flavour.
