14 Gallons of cider

JB and I put our apple harvests together today and shoved them through my shredder and press.

OG 1.045 -ish and being chewed up by some cider yeast.

here's a piccy - would love to write more but have to strip wallpaper and SWMBO saying scary things like "Right..."

I love the use of everyday items such a baby bath and odd bits of 4x2. Thats what makes homebrewing great

sneaked away...(shhhh!)

that baby bath is nearly perfect for teh job - you lose a bit out the side, but JB cunningly put some cardboard down and ocasionally tipped it back in.

the 4x2 made using the press easier, for the last two years i've just used tent pegs through the press feet, but with som many more apples we went for a better option. I stood on the wood whilst turning the handle (the press was screwed onto the wood)

you see the process aboutr halfway through - i.e. the pulp in the box is about 40% of the apples to the left. the other 60% of the processed apples is juice!

rumbled.

Excellent stuff :) how did you get on with the garden shredder, does it take the apples whole? I've heard that if you dont
wash & oil the blades after using it these things rust solid with the acid from the apples.
I've just built an interesting scratter but it's not finished yet :)

Great job G & JB 8)

That was the type of vertical shredder I was talking about in Frothy's post

There's going to be some sore heads in your house come sampling day 8)

I was loading the shredder whilst Gurgeh was pressing. Provided you didn't overload the hopper it managed o.k. The secret is to feed the fruit in constantly keeping some weight on the apples that are in direct contact with the spinning cutters.

A short piece of 2x1 was at hand to clear any obstruction caused by overloading although I found this mainly happened on startup after leaving apples in the hopper when we stopped for a wet.

Gotta do it

We'll be well at it the weekend after next. Can't wait, I can almost smell the apples now.

we chucked in some lemons (half a dozen through the whole lot) might be worth a try - smells nice!
