sorry another TC question

Post by gareth90 » Thu Oct 18, 2007 12:42 am

Hi ive set up some TC tonight(about 3 hours ago recipe in my sig) and as of yet I have seen no activity and after doing several searches and reading post on other members attempts it appears you all seem to have fairly instant activity?
I sprinkled yeast onto juice and waited 15mins and stirred as per yeast packet.
Fv is at room temp(assuming around 20 deg C as i broke my thermometer...doh

Any ideas or do i need to give it a bit more time?

Cheers!

Just checked it and it looks like ive got the beginnings of a yeast head, the surface had scummed over but not frothed and it had a sort of beery smell but that could be me confusing it with a yeasty smell as its my 1st cider.
I was beginning to think id picked a sugar free apple juice :?

Checked again and little or no life since last check so im gonna take action. :D
Ive dissolved 250g of sugar in a sterilised pan with a bit more of the juice to see if this wil kick start it into action unless anyone advises me against in the next 15 mins :?

Cheers!

TC normally goes like a rocket, especially if the yeast has been used before.

I wouldn't worry overly if it takes a while, I've had a couple of slow starters that have worried me given the usual speed.

Kick back and chill, I wouldn't worry yet.

Just leave it alone and stop fiddling.... your thermometer would still be in one piece if you'd left it alone :) .... you'll go blind keep playing with it :)

Cheers Steve

24oC seems a little on the high side, around 18-20 will give you better results in the end.

You can drink this stuff from around two weeks after bottling! :D
Fermenting -!
Maturing - Lenin's Revenge RIS
Drinking - !
Next brew - PA
Brew after next brew - IPA

Hi,the stat is preset and non adjustable on the immersion heater it keeps the brew between 20 & 26max depending on room temp.

The TC is now fizzing but has produced no yeasty head as such......not as lively as some of the examples ive seen on this forum :?

Thanks again DaaB,
Ive locked it in the spare room for being a naughty brew :D and it can stay there for a while!

Hi,
Ive just checked on my TC and its fermented down to a respectable 1.006 from an OG of 1.060 so reckon its close to bottling time.I had planned on transferring to a demijohn but now realise it may keep blowing the bung out on any secondary fermentation. My question now is will a demijohn with a rubber bung suffice or will it end up making a fairly flat scrumpy type TC?

At 1.006 I'd be tempted to bottle straight to 500ml PET bottles or plain glass with a 30ml apple juice (or 1 tsp sugar) primer.

1L PET would also be fine.

The last batch I bottled (yesterday) got down to 1.002 but that was without added sugar.
