What have people had most success with - Tesco, Saino's, Lidl or ASDA...

Muscovado, Demerara, Granulated or Honey...

Cider yeast, Champagne yeast, Liquid or Safale?

I use Asda juice (58p) and honey. I've used allinsons bread yeast and wine yeast from wilkinsons.

All lovely, it seems that apple juice is 58p in the main supermarkets around here but the lidl and netto it is nearly 90p.

Lovely stuff though.

Good call!

Te$$co value 23 litres of.

No added sugar.

Youngs Cider Yeast.

However, my choice of yeast from now on will be Whitelabs WLP775 simply going by the divine smells emanating from the fermentation bucket after only 4 days.

Drink & be merrie!

I've used four different juices, three different yeasts and two different sugars in five different quantities combined in many different ways.

My best have been the lower alcohol versions (6%-ish) irrespective of yeast or juice. I don't add any additional sugar now although the muscovado does give a lovely taste.

Currently on the Sainsbury's Pure Apple Juice with Young's Champagne yeast with no additional ingredients.

It would be quite nice to have some kind of reference chart on the site giving all the different TC variations (brands of juice, extra fermentables, yeast choices etc.) and what kind of cider you'll end up with if you do each one. Just a thought...

I was thinking the same thing, a lot of work though, just taking 5 types of juice, 5 yeasts and 4 sugars gives you 100 different recipes.

only done 2 so far, got another planned soon though.

somerfields own apple juice and a tin (smallish) of tate and lyles golden syrup (apple juice added about 5% and so did the syrup so ended around 10% total) with champagne yeast, very sweet and dry at the same time, possibly the syrup giving the sickly sweet taste, not very good, but tasted better when i was finnishing it aged around 2 months.

second one being just somerfields apple juice with youngs cider yeast, i have a 1L pet bottle in the fridge, its aged around 5 months now i think and unopened, cant seem to want to drink it fearing itll be damn good and ill drink it all and then itll be gone and ill have to wait 5 months to get some that good again  best get some more on i think, it was good aged around a month or 2 though so its all good.

next up ill be using asda for all my brews so will say if its crap (itll be better though i just know it)

19 litres of tesco pure apple juice. Whitelabs WLP775. Half a packet of Youngs French Oak Chips. When I keg it tonight I will add some sweetner and shed loads of CO2 so it can be served at tomorrows party. The last batch went down a storm. Hopefully this one will go with a bang as its for the bonfire party

Oak chips, haven't heard of that one before. What do they do for the flavour? Presumably they need to be strained off before drinking

They settle out in the yeast at the bottom. No need for filtering and they add that oak barrel taste. Yummmmm!!! I tried them in my first batch, repitched into batch two and three and now the yeast and chips are in the fridge in a sealed plastic bottle under RO water.

Has anyone recultured a yeast from a Cider bottle?
Whitelabs WLP775 is not available down here, so I thought I might give it a try.

Hey Gurus of Cider making,

I started a batch yesterday of what I hope will turn out reasonable.

I used 1 litre of AJ plus 4 litres of apple nectar, and 3 cups of sugar, no idea what SG was as no HB gear is available, its mighty green and interesting looking  I used the finest bread yeast (haha), and today it has inflated my balloon that i am using for an airlock. I am living in Mexico City and homebrewing does not exist here so it is impossible to find the right gear.

I will rack off in 3 weeks to secondary, and let sit for further 2 weeks before bottling to 1 litre PET, anybody fancy floggin me some gear P.M me as it would be great to get some propper yeast here!

all the best,
Underground.

Welcome aboard Underground! 8)

Just out of curiosity, what's the difference between apple juice and apple nectar?
