Apple Crisps

Post by PieOPah » Sun Sep 23, 2007 12:46 pm

Okay, nothing to do with alcohol, but I was wondering if anybody had any experience of baking their own crisps.

I would like to give my daughter a healthy snack and apple crisps seem a great idea.

I know that I would just need to slice them up thinnly and stick them in the oven, but any idea roughly how long and what heat? I guess I would need to pat them dry as well to help stop them sticking together. A nice dusting of cinnamon would certainly help them taste nicer as well :D

Cheers :)

When I make crisps from spuds, I use a potato peeler to get thin slices.

When I made cider, I used a chip maker to cut up the apples. I thought about trying apple chips, but didn't.

I have a slicer, just the cooking process which eludes me :) Looked up (briefly) info on google but struggled to find much!

To get that crispness (the essential characteristic of a crisp!) you'll need to deep fry them in oil at around 190oC for about a minute. This obviously reduces the overall nutritional value somewhat...

In terms of slicing, a mandolin like this one:

is ideal. Be careful of your fingers though!

I was wanting to bake them rather than frying. Something I would be happy to give my daughter as an alternative to fried crisps.

We have bought baked apple crisps in the past but they are quite expensive.... Wanted to make my own to save money!

I'll give em a go both with and without a small amount of oil :)

I like the idea of trying honey. I'll give that a go first.

Was definately going to try some with cinnamon. May even give the ginger a try.

Will have to wait until next weekend though as the wife has control of the kitchen for now :D

Thanks :D

Wouldn't a dehydrator do the trick
So that they still are good for you and nutrition has not been baked out

I was thinking about trying this at the weekend as I was pressing apples for apple wine.

I am sure they can be bought cheaper

Edit: indeed they can

Could use it to do hops as well :D
