Hoping schedule help

Post by Dunlambert » Sat Nov 10, 2007 9:40 pm

Hello I started AG last year and had 5 or 6 successful brews, and one Stout that had to go down the drain. I then had to take a break for a few months but have started up again a couple of weeks ago making Jims house ale, which I love and SWMBO even drinks it. So I made that again to keep her happy.

My question is I am going to brew again tomorrow and have been given some Tettnang hops @ 4.0% so what I want to do is brew the same basic ale below based around the Tettnang hops. Can someone give me a nice hoping schedule. I also have Cascade 4.0%, Goldings 4.5%, Fuggles 4.6% and some Challeneger 5.6%

25L

5kg Pale Malt
250g Crystal
100g Torrified Wheat

any help please :D

I'd go for 30IBUs from the fuggle and then add 20g of Tettnang at 45 minutes. then while cooling the wort steep another 25g of Tettnang once the wort is below 80C.

Tettnang is one of my favourite lager hops so please bear in mind that you will get a lager hop profile from this

Dare I say it, but you won't go far wrong with any combination of the hops you have, although be careful not to overpower them with others as they are quite delicate. As an idea - if you used just Tettnang only it would give you a good sense of their flavour for next time, although it will be a one dimensional hop taste.

You could also use Jims IBU formula for calculating something at your preferred bitterness level.

You could also search the forum recipe section for Tettnang to see what others might have already tried?

thanks guys. The wort is now just on to get it up to the boil. I think I will try TJB idea and add 30g of fuggles at the start then 20g tettnang after 45mins then steep another 25g of Tettnang while cooling.

Cascade Hater!!!!!

I take it you don't like SNPA then?

Is it just Cascade or is it all the C-hops you don't like?

Personally I don't like Target.

I quite enjoyed a pint of Saltaire Cascade ale I had a while back, come to think of it I've never met a hop I didn't like

Anything that tastes of citrus really, I tend to associate it with a low level Lactobacter infection and as I tend to get these brewing in the house . . . .Yeuch!

I find target to be somewhat objectionable when mixed with SO4, but with other yeasts its fine. I used it as the bittering hop with Goldings and Fuggle in my IPA, and from early tastes there is very little harsh bitterness. . . . In fact the perceived bitterness is very low, and its turned out to be quite a malty beer. . . . . . I may very well have to make a bitter tea to raise it.
