Keeping 'speciality' grains

Post by retourrbx » Fri Nov 16, 2007 12:52 am

I'm going to get a sac of pale ale malt but am also looking at getting some black, chocolate and wheat malt... how long are these likely to stay good for so I can work out how much to get as a "stock pile"

Thanking you...

I theory, a few months if crushed.

I have kept specialty grains crushed for 12 months or more, but they are in sealed bags in a grain bin, with a 500g bag of silica gel. In fact I've kept some rye malt for longer than that, with no issues and it is supposed to have a very short shelf life.

if the specialty malt is pre packed it will usualy have a Bestbeofre date.
Burpacks malt is packed in polythene bags, there hardly air tight and often kept in warm brewshop. Ive kept it in simalar conditions right up to and beyond this date and its been fine.
