Well, I think I have everything I need now.
The garden tap is fixed and no longer leaking (thanks for the tips DaaB). I have a 10ft hose (will probably cut that up to a more suitable size), I have 2 Hose Clips, The Imersion Chiller has been ordered.
Got a nice big order placed
2 Fermenting Bins (to make my mash tun)
2 Fermenter Taps
A Hop Strainer (to plug into my Brupacks Boiler)
An Imerssion Chiller
Don't think I need anything else.... (going to be batch sparging so don't need spinny sparging arm)
On top of that I have put in my grain order....
25Kg Maris Otter
1Kg Roasted Barely
1Kg Black Malt
1Kg Chocolate Malt
125g Fuggles
and a smack pack of 1084 Irish
First beer I will be making will be a cherry/chocolate stout (calling it Black Forrest Stout - original eh!)
6 kg. Maris Otter Pale
0.20 kg. English Chocolate Malt
0.20 kg. English Black Roast
0.5 kg. Roasted Barley
0.5 kg. Oats Flaked
100 g. Fuggle (Whole, 4.75 %AA) boiled 60 minutes.
25 g. Fuggle (Whole, 4.75 %AA) boiled 15 minutes.
7 tablespoons Cocoa Powder [last 10 mins of boil]
Yeast: WYeast 1084 Irish Ale
0.75 kilograms Cherries [In Secondary]
(Any comments on the recipe would be appreciated - both positive and negative)
Obviously I'll have a nice supply of grain to make a couple of different beers. I also have a few packets of muntons gold yeast lying around (hence only 1 yeast in order) and I'll definately be saving the yeast for a couple of batches! Only thing I'll need to buy for the next few beers will be some hops. Fortunately I can get some basic hops locally.
One thing I forgot to buy was Irish Moss. Since I'll be using an imerssion chiller this should do pretty much the same job shouldn't it??

Personally......
I'd have kept my first recipe really simple and not worry about adding stuff (cherries) to the fermenter and are they sanitised etc etc
My first brew was just marris otter and goldings (single addition), not so much to screw up there (although I did try
).
Whatever you do, good luck !

QUOTE (Daft as a Brush @ Aug 10 2006, 11:11 AM) stoning 0.5kg of cherrys was a balls-ache of a job, next time i'd be tempted to use a concentrate, I doubt you' notice in a beer.
I have already bought the cherries and stoned them last week. At first I tried pushing the stone out with a cocktail stick. Since that didn't work I had to cut them in half. With my hands covered in juice I was really worried that I was going to be coming into work with major staining. Was extremely relieved to find that it washed off relatively easy
The cherries are currently frozen and I will be pouring over boiling water before using them!!
Thanks for the advise on the amount of cherries DaaB. Don't think that I will be increasing the amount just yet. Firstly I want the flavour to be subtle. Secondly I don't think I could face stoning another huge batch just yet.. Finally I have already spent over budget on beer stuff so can't really afford to buy much more

I think you probably have too much roast barley and possibly too much black malt. They can be quite harsh and you only need a small amount for colour and bite. I'd lower both considerably and up the chocolate malt if it were my brew.
There looks to be a lot of bittering hops too, but I am not sure the bitterness you are aming for with this recipe.

QUOTE (jasonaustin @ Aug 10 2006, 02:55 PM) Assuming a 5G/23L brew length and 75% efficiency, this gives an OG of 1070 and approx 6.5-7.0%. Handle with care :stun
Since this is my first AG brew I have no idea what my efficiency will be. Because of this I upped my grain bill to ensure I got a fairly decent OG.
Will be batch sparging so once I know my efficiency it should be fairly consistent
