Slightly strange flavour

Post by Old Bloater » Sun Dec 02, 2007 10:38 am

Hi
I can't be the only person to have experienced this!
Of 4 recent brews of the same recipe, 2 of them have quite a noticible "taint" or additional flavour.
The clarity is OK, I really cant see that it's an infection (but happy to be told otherwise). It's very difficult to explain without the skills if Ox Clark or Jilly wotshername but I would perhaps describe it as "flowery/metallic".
It is drinkable and I don't seem to put extra strain on the septic tank (if you know what I mean) but I would love to get to the bottom of it. (no pun intended)
Could it be from "oversparging" the hops or squeezing them or is it a mild infection of some sort and is there a test of some sort.
All ideas gratefully received.
Cheers
OB

I would reccomend against hop sparging ive had very little sucsess from it.
If it is a taint from washing out the break material from your hops it will taste of Solvents and medical TCP

vossy had trouble with metalic taints and put it down to his rusted plate chiller. he might be on to confirm this later.
