I have just bought a tub of Cascade hop pellets which I plan to use in conjunction with some normal leaf hops.
Do I just use them as normal or is there something else I need to know?

Hop Pellet Help Please
Does this mean I need to use 15% less to achieve the same bitterness?RabMaxwell wrote:I think it's about 15 % more efficiency with pellets i use Promash so it calculates it for me anyway.I just had a look at promash the default setting for pellets is 10%
I am using a manifold and cheers for the tipMysterio wrote:Are you using a manifold to filter your hops? If so you may want to recirculate a gallon or so when you're running off to help filter out the pellet trub through the whole hops. Also the added utilisation
I use pellet hops exclusively. Primarily b/c I assume that whole flowers wouldn't travel well all the way from the UK.
Most sources put 10% increase in bittering effectiveness with pellets. However you supposedly get less flavor/aroma out of a pellet. Again I do not know for sure as I have only used pellets.
I think we use different boiling systems so can't help you much on how to get the wort out without the hops. In my system I simply syphon off the top the wort off the top of the trub/hop after they have settled out to the bottom of the kettle.

Not so sure. If you have fresh pellets and fresh whole hops then yes the aroma from a whole hop is better as the pelleting process destroys some of it. Pellets however keep a lot better so after a few months the pellets probably have better aroma than whole if they are kept at room temp.iowalad wrote:However you supposedly get less flavor/aroma out of a pellet.
Pellets tend to give up their aroma quicker than whole so it can boil away quicker than for whole hops. It can be worthwhile adjusting addition amounts so that very late additions are larger to retain more aroma.
