Finings

Post by Buzz » Fri Jan 18, 2008 2:24 pm

I've not fined any of my AG brews to date and whilst I'm not unhappy with the results, the beers are not polished and I was thinking about the use of finings on my next brew.

I'll be putting my beer in a pressure barrel and, what I can't get my head around, is how you will get natural carbonation if you use finings to knock all the yeast out of suspension - I see on Jim's website that he adds priming sugar and finings to the barrel at the same time. What is the point of priming if there will be no active yeast left? I'm obviously missing something and await enlightenment :?

At present I barrel without priming and get a good level of natural carbonation. Can this continue if I use finings :?:

This tread should answer your questions

Looks like you can use Auxillary finings in the primary and prime/natural carbonate in the barrel

Thanks O, looks like the best bet is to use Aux finings in the primary which will still allow any yeast in suspension to be carried over to the Barrel for natural carbonation?

If I've got that right, does anyone know what sort of finings Brewmaker Beercleer is?? I got some from the Hop Shop - main ingredient seems to be Bovine Collagen. Lovely

Thanks Steve, I'll save the Beercleer for when I get my corny in March. I'll have to get some Aux finings to use with my Beershphere for now. Cheers.

I use gelatin all the time, especially when I do cask ales. Put half a pint of cold water in a pan with about a tablespoon of finings and heat up slowly. Never boil, just keep it on low and keep stirring until the liquid is clear. Chuck it in your racked beer with priming sugar(if necessary). I use Safale 05 pretty much exclusively, and it doesn't drop out as nice as some of the more flocculant strains. I get beer that looks filtered.
